Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

UN Women MCO Caribbean’s work covers the entire English speaking Caribbean and British and Dutch overseas territories. The MCO works in partnership with regional Governments and its sister United Nations agencies in support of six United Nations Development Assistance Frameworks (UNDAFs) for Barbados and the OECS, Belize, Guyana, Jamaica, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago.

The MCO Caribbean communications strategy is one of the components underpinning the MCO’s work as an advocate for and as a knowledge provider on gender equality in the region. The MCO Caribbean is therefore seeking to engage an intern to support the communications work which falls under the Directorate section.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the UN Women Deputy Representative and the day-to-day supervision and guidance of the Communications Analyst, the Communications Intern will support the implementation of the MCO’s communications and advocacy strategies to increase the standing and awareness of UN Women with partners, the media and the public. 

The intern will be expected to:

Create Daily and Weekly news clippings:

  • Monitor regional media capture of UN Women MCO Caribbean work specifically;
  • Monitor stories on gender equality and women’s empowerment generally.

Support the development of content for the MCO Caribbean website http://caribbean.unwomen.org/en) and Facebook page:

  • Write and edit articles;
  • Identify photos and gender equality-specific data and stories.

Support the implementation of UN Women campaigns and initiatives including the UNiTE to End Violence Against Women and Girls Orange Day, the Beijing +20 Campaign and the HeForShe campaign:

  • Provide technical and administrative support to the Communications Analyst in actions around the UNiTE Orange Day;
  • Support the development of advocacy materials on the HeForShe and Beijing+20 Campaigns.

Support the MCO Caribbean in organising and implementing media events:

  • Support the development of press releases;
  • Provide administrative support where needed for media events;
  • Support the Communications Analyst in developing and implementing calendar of events for programme media events.

Provide support to the Communications Analyst’s participation in UN Communications Groups (UNCG):

  • Assist with the planning of UNCG meetings;
  • Assist with taking minutes for UNCG meetings;
  • In support of the UNCG, participate in the planning and execution of UN System activities.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • A recent graduate (within one year) or current student enrolled in the final year of a Bachelor’s Degree or in a Master’s Degree programme, or equivalent in Mass Communications or a related field.

Experience:

  • Experience working in communications - advocacy, public relations, or journalism;
  • Experience in writing, editing and producing materials for website content and social media networks;
  • Experience with content management systems and tools;
  • Working knowledge of photo editing software, online video publishing and experience with flash;
  • Knowledge of gender and human rights issues desirable.

Language:

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Knowledge of any other UN official language is an asset.

Conditions of Internship:

Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent); 
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year;
  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship; 
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution; 
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship; 
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed; 
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN Women during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship; 
  • The intern must provide proof of enrolment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrolment (where relevant), a scanned copy of her/his passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.

Timeframes and Institutional Arrangements

The internship will run from 19 May 2015 until 25 August 2015. The internship is attached to the MCO Caribbean office which is located in Barbados. The intern will be expected to work at least three days a week out of the MCO Caribbean office.

Hardware, software, and communication

The intern will be furnished with a portable computer (laptop) for the duration of the internship. The intern must be reasonably accessible by email and telephone (preferably mobile).
