Background

The Donor Relations and Partnerships Intern will work under the supervision of the Donor and Resource Mobilization Specialists in the Resource Mobilization Branch of the Strategic Partnerships Division at UN Women headquarters in New York. She/he will support the outreach to specific Member States of the United Nations assisting in the implementation of the 150/250 Campaign. The internship will provide an opportunity to follow intergovernmental process, in particular within the context of the 2nd and 3rd Committees of the UN General Assembly. In addition, the internship is an opportunity for a student of International Relations/Affairs to connect the theoretical aspects of their coursework with the practical application, for example, in researching aid policies and priorities or Member States and their international commitments to gender equality and the empowerment of women.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • In meetings with Member States/permanent missions, support the presentation of UN Women’s mandate and emerging priorities for accelerating progress toward gender equality and women’s empowerment, which is linked to the need for increased political/financial support for UN Women;
  • Support the outreach to Member States including drafting correspondence, preparing relevant briefing materials, updating database of governments counterparts in New York and in the field, uploading documents on UN Women intranet;
  • Assist in outreach in preparation of the Executive Board, UN General Assembly and Beijing +20 events; support Donor Focal Points with preparing folders with relevant materials, update database of contacts at the Missions and field, assist in drafting and editing letters;
  • Support customizing of files for specific donor countries, including UN Women mandate and activities in the regions;
  • Support follow-up with permanent missions and delegations on their financial contributions ensuring all efforts are made to secure that core contributions including symbolic pledges and payments are received from as many countries as possible;
  • Support the updating of specific donor profiles and databases based on research about aid policy and priorities of those countries and their commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment;
  • In collaboration with the UN Women programme and thematic divisions when relevant, support preparation of brief funding proposals.
  • Undertaking other tasks and activities as requested.

Competencies

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills;
  • Excellent research and analytical skills (including the ability to succinctly summarize research findings in written briefs, reports, etc.)
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint and Outlook);
  • Attention to detail, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with staff members of different national and cultural backgrounds;
  • Familiarity with UN structure and values is an asset.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Undertaking a Masters or in the final year of a Bachelors in one or more of the following: business/business management, international relations/development, economics, women’s studies or political science.;
  • Graduates from a Bachelors or Masters program within one year of the start of the internship are also eligible to apply.

Language:

  • Fluency in written and spoken English required;
  • Knowledge of French, Spanish or Arabic desired.

UN Women Internship Policy:

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by UNWomen. All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN Women duirng the period of the internship or for six months immediately follwoing the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan.
