Background

The United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (UN Women) is grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. UN Women provides support to Member States’ efforts and priorities in meeting their gender equality goals and for building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

UN Women  is mandated  to  lead,  coordinate  and  promote  accountability  for the implementation  of gender  equality commitments  across  the  UN System.  As such, UN Women in Zimbabwe is the administrative agent for the Joint Programme on Gender Equality, which brings together state, UN development agencies, development partners, Civil Society Organisations and a number of different gender equality advocates to support the Government of Zimbabwe in attaining its development goals under the MDGs and in the future in line with the SDGs in the Post 2015 Framework. Throughout its interventions, the joint programme focuses on capacity-strengthening at macro, meso and micro levels and in advocacy at the highest levels to lobby for integration gender equality into policy and legislative development.

The Joint Programme for Gender Equality is implemented through four main pillars:

  • Promoting women’s security and combating gender-based violence;
  • Women’s political participation and influence;
  • Women’s economic empowerment and working conditions; and
  • National accountability on gender equality and women’s empowerment;

To facilitate the implementation of its coordination mandate in the Joint Programme for Gender Equality and UN Women is looking engage a Coordination Analyst to provide support to the Joint Programme Coordination Team. The Coordination Analyst will be reporting to the Joint Programme Coordinator.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Joint Programme for Gender Equality Coordinator the UN volunteer will undertake tasks across the following broad areas: (a) Coordination; (b) Monitoring and Evaluation; and (c) Communications. The UN Volunteer will undertake the following tasks:

Support the overall coordination function of the JPGE under the guidance of the JPGE Programme Coordinator:

  • Provide support in management of various coordination structures such as: the JPGE Steering Committee; the Pillar Expert Panels (the technical advice tier of the JPGE) and other structures;
  • Provide support in disbursement of funds to the Participating UN Agencies;
  • Assist in coordinating the JPGE with other on-going UN and external interventions through the UN Gender Theme Group, to ensure full overview of existing initiatives;
  • Provide procurement support for any procurement related activities of the Programme Coordination Team;
  • Provide implementation support on the UN Women specific projects of the JPGE when required.

Provide support in the Monitoring and Evaluation function of the JPGE Coordination Team:

  • Assist in developing and deploying various planning and reporting formats;
  • Assist in consolidating information received from the Participating UN Organisations and drafting of reports;
  • Provide support to follow up with various partners and stakeholders to receive information on time;
  • Assist in updating programme document, logical frameworks, risk logs, budgets, annual work plans and other relevant documents as required;
  • Compare information from various partners to note overlaps, coordination issues, and to ensure full overview and understanding of the on-going initiatives within the programme.

Provide support to knowledge management and communications for the JPGE:

  • Provide communication support, including drafting of minutes, reports, speeches, talking points, press statements, newsletter and website articles on the JPGE;
  • Assist in researching best practices and lessons learnt on joint programmes to ensure the effective implementation of the programme;
  • Provide support in resource mobilisation efforts conducted by UN Women and the Programme Coordinator.

Performs other tasks as assigned by the JPGE Programme Coordinator and the Country Representative.

Furthermore, UN Volunteers are required to:

  • Strengthen their knowledge and understanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant UNV and external publications and take active part in UNV activities (for instance in events that mark IVD);
  • Be acquainted with and build on traditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
  • Reflect on the type and quality of voluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoing reflection activities;
  • Contribute articles/write-ups on field experiences and submit them for UNV publications/websites, newsletters, press releases, etc.;
  • Assist with the UNV Buddy Programme for newly-arrived UN Volunteers;
  • Promote or advise local groups in the use of online volunteering, or encourage relevant local individuals and organizations to use the UNV Online Volunteering service whenever technically possible.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Masters degree in Economics, Social Sciences, Gender Equality or Women Studies, International Relations, Political Sciences, Communications or related field.

Experience:

  • At least 5 years or more relevant work experience; job experience within an institution (academic, government, civil society) with a focus on gender equality, women’s rights and/or gender and development would be an advantage;
  • Experience with project management, M&E and logical frameworks would be an advantage;
  • Advanced knowledge of Word and Excel would be an advantage.

Language:

  • Strong English writing and editing skills essential.
