Background

The Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS) of UNDP has the responsibility of developing all relevant policy and guidance to support the results of UNDP’s Strategic Plan. UNDP, through the Governance and Peacebuilding (G&P) Cluster of BPPS, ensures inclusive and effective democratic governance by bringing together its ability to advocate, advise, foster impartial spaces for dialogue, achieve consensus and build institutions. It also supports governance institutions in countries to ensure constitutional reforms, organize credible elections, strengthen parliaments and address policy and institutional options for peace, risk-reduction and development through reconciliation, empowerment and inclusion.

The G&P Cluster’s staff provide technical advice to Country Offices; advocates for UNDP corporate messages; represent UNDP at multi-stakeholder fora including public-private dialogues, government and civil society dialogues, South-South and Triangular cooperation initiatives; and, engage in UN inter-agency coordination in specific thematic areas.

In addition, the G&P Cluster supports partners in the building of responsive and accountable institutions at all levels of government. This work is central to ensuring that development is both effective and sustainable for citizens. By supporting member states to deliver quality services, improve accountability and expand the opportunities for inclusive economic and social progress, UNDP builds resilience to crisis and reinforces the dynamic relationship between State and the people, at all levels of society. To achieve results for the efforts, the G&P Cluster have produced a variety of materials to give guidance, share information, document evidence, achievements and challenges.

The Responsive and Accountable Institutions Team of the G&P Cluster has initiated a project to document all the materials gathered for government systems. This initiative would help to centralize all materials for easy access and retrieval for use by staff in Regional Hubs, Country offices and other UNDP offices.
