UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors. UN Women is also increasing its engagement in humanitarian response through interagency collaboration.

In response to the Syrian humanitarian response in Jordan UN Women works at multiple levels to respond to the specific needs of host communities, building on their own initiatives and skills as well as addressing vulnerabilities. UN Women runs a programme supporting micro credit interventions in Mafraq and is matching that with broader support to Jordan’s hosting communities, including Irbid, Amman and Zarqa. In doing this UN Women is supporting local initiatives and government structures in Jordan to implement livelihoods and protection related initiates. Therefore UN Women is seeking an Assistant Project Officer to support its programming on hosting communities.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall supervision of the Recovery Specialist, the Assistant Project Officer will be responsible for the following duties and responsibilities:

Project Support and Implementation:

  • Assist in the implementation of the UN Women’s hosting communities work in Jordan.
  • Support grant and procurement management and reporting.
  • Support strategies for partnership-building, evaluation and knowledge management; and ensuring information flow and team-building across the diverse network of partners and stakeholders involved in UN Women’s programming.
  • Assist in the undertaking of capacity assessments and the support needed to bring on new partners – including preparing cases for review and approval.
  • Serve as secretariat for project steering committees – including maintaining up-to-date records of workplans, schedules and minutes.
  •  Assist to facilitate quality assurance of all host communities projects and undertake technical assistance and monitoring missions to the projects sites.
  • Assist to identify capacity development needs of partners and develop adequate solutions to ensure effective project implementation.
  • Assist to monitor the development of, and provide substantive guidance and technical inputs, to ensure the quality of products commissioned by UN Women.
  • Assist to ensure high-quality, results-oriented reporting, for internal and external audiences contributing substantively to monthly, six monthly and annual reports.
  • Perform additional job-related duties, tasks and special projects as assigned.

Developing partnerships and networks:

  • Assist to strengthen and enhance partnership/co-operation/ consultation/ coordination with, national and local state actors, national and international civil society actors, specially, women’s organisations, bilateral institutions, UN, donors and private foundations for more effective and coordinated project implementation as appropriate.
  • Assist to ensure effective partnership, networking and coordination between other on-going UN Women programmes, projects and activities in Jordan.
  • Assist to maintain a database of donors for the sector and initiate result-oriented resource mobilisation actions.

Research on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality in Jordan:

  • Assist to coordinate and support high quality research to generate knowledge on women’s rights and gender equality In Jordan.
  • Assist to derive policy recommendations from research and assist in the development and implementation of an evidence-based advocacy strategy for work being undertaken.
  • Work in a team to produce concise reports, briefing notes etc.

Administration of programme:  

  • Assist in the preparation of budget for programme activities and follow up with finance.
  • Support grant and procurement management through the follow up of vendor forms, FACE forms, payments, etc.
  • Assist to coordinate necessary logistics for day to day project implementation.
  • Collate necessary documentation for contract award and transmit to operations unit.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • University degree in women’s protection related activities, Social Sciences, Gender Equality, Human Rights, international development or other related field.

Experience:

  • At least 6 years of experience supporting the implementation of development focused projects and administrative experience is required at the national or international level.
  • Experience in project implementation and administration.
  • Experience working in cooperation with local partner and Government.
  • Experience in undertaking capacity development.
  • Experience in project oversight and implementation.
  • Experience working with the UN is an asset.
  • Understanding of principles of gender equality and women’s empowerment in development and recovery contexts,
  • Prior working experience with the UN will be highly considered.
  • Experience in financial management & ATLAS knowledge will be an added value.
  • Experience in the usage of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc).  

Language:

  • Fluent written and spoken Arabic and English.
