Background

An introductory, interactive, didactic and self-paced e-course on gender equality has been developed by the UN Women Training Centre, at the request of the Inter-Agency Network on Women and Gender Equality (IANWGE) and supported by the Coordination Division under the umbrella of the UN System-wide Action Plan on Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN-SWAP). This course, which is entitled “I Know Gender: An Introduction to Gender Equality for UN Staff” can be found on UN Women’s eLearning Campus at trainingcentre.unwomen.org.

The overall objective of the “I Know Gender” course is to develop and/or strengthen knowledge, understanding and awareness of basic concepts related to gender equality and women’s empowerment for UN staff, UNV personnel, and UN volunteers at HQ, regional and country levels, thus promoting the integration of a gender equality perspective in everyday work and with a view to bring about behavioural change.

The e-learning course’s target audience is all UN staff, including UNV personnel, and UN volunteers, with no specific background on gender equality and at all levels (from general service staff to professionals). Therefore, the e-learning course does not focus on technical skills in gender analysis and mainstreaming methods nor does it target practitioners who already possess a technical background in gender mainstreaming and women’s empowerment.

The e-learning course consists of three mandatory modules which users must complete sequentially.

These are:

  • Gender Concepts to Get Started;
  • International Frameworks for Gender Equality; and
  • Promoting Gender Equality throughout the UN System. Optional thematic modules can be accessed after the user completes the core modules. Some of these were developed in collaboration with partner agencies as identified;
  • Women´s Economic Empowerment – UN Women;
  • Women’s Leadership and Decision-Making – UN Women;
  • Violence against Women and Girls – UN Women;
  • Gender Equality in the World of Work – ITC-ILO;
  • Gender Equality and Education – UNESCO;
  • Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights - UNFPA;
  • Gender Equality in Emergencies – WFP;
  • Sexual and Gender Diversity and Human Rights – OHCHR and UNAIDS; and
  • Gender, Peace and Security – UN Women.

The optional thematic modules are self-paced and interactive 30-minute courses, which replicate the main learning structure of the mandatory modules. Although the thematic modules are stand-alone modules, learners must complete the mandatory modules before they can access the optional modules. Therefore, the optional modules need not include basic concepts or the international framework for gender equality, as learners will already have completed that content. All thematic modules are offered to all UN staff, including UN volunteers, as per the criteria explained above and are integrated into the same online platform.

Duties and Responsibilities

Consultancy services are sought to develop content for an online thematic module on Volunteerism and Gender Equality to be offered as part of the I Know Gender course. The module is expected to highlight Volunteerism and Gender Equality and how to promote Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment through volunteerism, and when mobilizing volunteers for civic engagements. In addition, the impact and added value of Volunteerism on gender equality and the empowerment of women will also be included. The module is also expected to act both as an awareness-raising tool and an information/advocacy tool for UN staff, including UNV personnel and UN volunteers. The content will be developed in English.

After reviewing and completing the I Know Gender course for reference, the consultant, under the direct supervision of the UN Women Training Programme Coordinator, will be responsible for:

  • Developing the script of the 30-minute e-learning module making the case for gender equality within volunteerism, providing specific examples, and referring to the main applicable global commitments. The script must include as a minimum;  title, introduction, learning objectives, learning sections, theoretical framework/content, special cases (examples, good practices, case studies, etc.), relevant statistics and data, final evaluation (in the form of a 5 or 10-question multiple choice quiz), and additional resources (PDFs of reference documents and additional reading, videos, audio);
  • Providing suggestions for on-screen presentation of content, including terms to highlight, pi;tures or videos, and interactive activities, as per template and guidance to be provided by UN Women;
  • Providing support after the validation of the script by the UNV advisory group and be available for consultation to ensure the smooth transposition of the script into the technical interface. Although the consultant is not expected to undertake technical work developing the online module (software), which will be commissioned to a separate consulting firm, availability to liaise with the technical team to ensure effectiveness of the process is required.

The consultant will not be credited as author of the training course but his/her work will be acknowledged in the final product.

Expected Deliverables and Timeframe:

  • Outline of online module on Volunteerism and Gender Equality to be completed within one week from the signing of the contract.
  • Draft script of the online module on Volunteerism and Gender Equality to be completed within six weeks from the signing of the contract;
  • Final script of the online module, to be submitted within two weeks of receiving the consolidated comments;
