Background

Regional Office for Caucasus, Central Asia and Ukraine (ROCCA) (www.unocha.org/rocca) OCHA promotes early warning and disaster preparedness, and works towards strengthening the national capacity and that of the international community to respond to slow and sudden-onset disasters quickly and in a coordinated fashion.

The main goal of ROCCA’s communications strategy is to promote a more enabling environment for humanitarian action in Central Asia and the Caucasus and a more effective coordination system through public information, partnerships, donor and media outreach. The scope of communications duties includes reporting, internal communications, capacity-building, public and media relations, donor outreach and information management.

Duties and Responsibilities

Purpose of the internship

The internship is intended to:

Promote a better understanding of humanitarian issues in the region and globally, and give an insight into the work of the United Nations.

To provide UNOCHA with the able assistance of an outstanding young student specializing in a field related to their own work.

To provide UNOCHA with crucial support in the lead-up to the World Humanitarian Summit Regional Consultation for South and Central Asia on 28-30 July in Dushanbe, Tajikistan (www.worldhumanitariansummit.org)

Scope of Work

The Communications Intern will be expected to work full-time for the duration of minimum two months (with possibility of extension to six months). During the internship, the following activities are to be completed:

  • Assist in implementing regional communications strategy for the WHS Regional Consultation for South and Central Asia;
  • Assist in social media activities aimed at engaging audience in the consultations process;
  • Media monitoring (daily media monitoring and production of brief press overviews);
  • Assist in production of at least one OCHA publication (Humanitarian bulletin, humanitarian funding update) 

Intern will be expected to perform other tasks, as required.

At the end of the internship, the ROCCA PI and Reporting Associate will provide full feedback on the job performed, and upon successful completion of the assigned duties, intern may request a letter of recommendation.

Required Skills and Experience

Education: Applicant must be enrolled in a degree program in a graduate school (outstanding bachelor students in third or fourth year of college may apply but preference will be given to Master degree candidates) at the time of application and during the internship that is relevant for the internship. Applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree in communications, international relations, public relations or liberal studies.

Language requirements: Fluency in oral and written English; knowledge of Russian is highly recommended.

Experience: No experience required. Background in media relations, social media marketing, English-Russian translation and/or office management preferred.
