Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The UN Women Training Centre (TC) in Santo Domingo is dedicated to supporting the UN and other stakeholders to realize commitments to gender equality, women’s empowerment and women’s rights through transformative training and learning. The UN Women TC offers training for gender equality and women’s empowerment to UN Women staff, UN agencies, as well as personnel of governments, civil society and partners. The gender capacity development programmes range from basic and introductory levels to specialized and advanced levels for diverse audiences with different backgrounds. In terms of capacity development strategies and techniques, the TC makes maximum use of on-line training techniques, paying special attention to e-learning courses and an active learning approach.

The Training Centre has developed a Facilitator’s Guide on Understanding Masculinity and Violence against Women and Girls. The Guide provides methodologies to facilitate discussion and reflection between men and women on gender inequality and violence against women and girls (VAW/G) through understanding masculinity and challenging harmful masculine norms and practices. It contains a set of basic concepts, activities, practical exercises, and on line references for training resources.

As part of the roll-out and dissemination strategy, a training of trainers (TOT) is carried out in order to create a pool of trainers who would be able to deliver training on this topic to UN offices and partners at the regional and country levels. In line with the strategic approach of the Training Centre to establish a quality control mechanism and strengthen standards of its courses, the Training Centre seeks to enhance its TOT courses, thereby enhancing the capacities of trainers. In 2014, the TC trained 21 trainers on understanding masculinity and VAW/G. The training received positive feedback and high ratings, according to the evaluation and satisfaction survey. Trainers have implemented what they learned in their local settings. In 2015, the Training Centre is organizing a refresher course to further enhance their capacities, deepen theoretical and conceptual knowledge, strengthen facilitation competencies, and convene a community for knowledge sharing and experience exchange.

The objective of this consultancy is to support and co-facilitate a blended course for trainers on masculinity and violence against women and girls.
