Background

Launched at the United Nations in 2008, the Business Call to Action (BCtA) aims to accelerate progress towards the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) by challenging companies to develop inclusive business models that offer the potential for both commercial success and development impact.

The Business Call to Action (BCtA) is a global corporate leadership platform, with over 100 member companies that are incorporating inclusive business approaches in their operations to help advance the MDGs. As innovators in this space, BCtA member companies are advancing the inclusive business agenda by creating novel business models, sharing lessons learned, and forging partnerships to improve scale and increase development impact.

The BCtA global leadership platform is supported by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency, the UK Department for International Development, the US Agency for International Development, and the United Nations Global Compact. The BCtA is hosted by the United Nations Development Programme.

As part of BCtA’s mission and under the supervision of the Programme Manager, the Programme Analyst will assist the Programme Manager in UNDP procurement of services, contracts and organizations, in HR, compliance, budgeting, work planning and reporting processes for BCtA. S/he will assist the Programme Manager in preparing submissions for the Donor Steering Committee and in ensuring excellent ongoing execution of the activities of BCtA. The Analyst will also directly oversee knowledge creation and event management for BCtA and will collaborate closely with the outreach teams and Country Platform partner organizations. S/he will oversee member company linkages with key ecosystem partners, as well as other partners and affiliates in order to increase impact of company initiatives. Finally, s/he will assist in areas of communications (production of quarterly newsletters, webinar series, etc.) and membership engagement (managing and updating the customer relationship database and mailing lists, etc.) and provide other general administrative support to program activities of the Secretariat as required.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions:

Implementation of programme strategies for the Business Call to Action:

  • Support Programme Manager in work-planning activities according to BCtA’s logframe;
  • Provide thorough analysis identifying areas for support and interventions within the thematic and sectoral areas specified in BCtA’s Project Document and logframe.

Management Support to the Business Call to Action:

  • Effective application of RBM tools, establishment of management targets (BSC) and monitoring achievement of results;
  • Coordination of programme implementation with executing partners, country offices and other stakeholders. Introduction of performance indicators/ success criteria, cost recovery, targets and milestones;
  • Finalization of contribution agreement; determination of required revisions; coordination of the mandatory and budget re-phasing exercises, closure of projects through review. Programme Analyst can perform functions of Manager Level 1 in Atlas for POs and vouchers approval, participates in recruitment processes for projects;
  • Financial and substantive monitoring and evaluation of the projects, identification of operational and financial problems, development of solutions;
  • Follow up on audit recommendations. All exceptions are timely reported;
  • Aggregate reports are regularly prepared on activities, outputs and outcomes. Preparation of donor reports.

Creation of strategic partnerships and implementation of the resource mobilization strategy:

  • In consultation with the Programme Manager, oversee the development of a network of institutional affiliates (including like-minded organizations, practitioners, academia, business intermediaries from the South and North, foundations, content providers, etc.) who can be engaged in providing strategic advice to BCtA companies and partners, and further advance the community of practice;
  • Manage member company linkages with key ecosystem partners operating in the country of implementation, as well as other partners and affiliates in order to increase impact of company initiatives;
  • Coordinate the collection of financial and indicator performance data, aggregating and analyzing information in order to identify key outcomes of the Programme.
  • Analysis and research of information on donors, preparation of substantive briefs on possible areas of cooperation, identification of opportunities for initiation of new projects, active contribution to the overall office effort in resource mobilization.

Provision of top quality advice services to the Business Call to Action and facilitation of knowledge building and management:

  • Oversee the development of key knowledge products in inclusive business that will help companies improve their company initiatives and/or help new companies craft/refine potential company initiatives for membership within BCtA;
  • Manage research/knowledge/communications projects from conception to publication and dissemination, including project and methodological design, resource planning, and analysis for BCtA company case studies series, member sector reports, annual review reports, quarterly newsletters, collateral materials, and others;
  • Oversee the production of BCtA advocacy events, including the flagship General Assembly Annual Forum, liaising with UNDP and other and strategic partners on high-level event planning.

Impact of Results:

The key results have an impact on the efficiency of the unit. Accurate analysis and presentation of information, thoroughly researched and fully documented work strengthens the capacity of the office and facilitates subsequent action by the supervisor. Incumbent’s own initiative is decisive in results of work and timely finalization.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Advanced University Degree (Master's degree), preferably in international development, international affairs, public policy, development economics, or other relevant field.

Experience:

  • Minimum of two (2) years of relevant experience (with public or private sector) in the area of project and financial management, knowledge creation and event management;
  • Of which at least two (2) years of experience in the area of inclusive business including research, knowledge creation and programme coordination, hands-on experience in design, monitoring and evaluation of development projects;
  • Familiarity/previous work with/in multi-donor/stakeholder organization preferred;
  • Familiarity with the UNDP, its procedures and work on private sector and development desirable.

Language:

  • Fluent in English (written and spoken);
  • Fluency in another UN language is desirable.
