UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Unit/ Project Background:

Promoting and Protecting Migrant Women’s Rights

This is a three-year research and advocacy programme funded by the European commission, to be developed in three countries (Mexico, Moldova and the Philippines) to promote and protect women migrant workers’ labour and human rights by engaging with international, national human rights mechanisms to enhance accountability and awareness.

This programme strives to promote women migrant worker’s rights and protect them against exclusion and exploitation at all stages of migration. It aims to contribute to this objective by:

(1) channelling key findings to strategic international human rights mechanisms and supporting national oversight institutions and governments to ensure accountability to women migrant workers at all stages; and (2) strengthening women migrant workers’ organizations and their support groups to effectively engage with the key stakeholders to ensure greater accountability to commitments to protect and preserve rights

Duties and Responsibilities

Description of Responsibilities & Learning Objectives:

  • Follow up and assistance to meetings and activities related with the program “Promoting and protecting women migrant workers labour and human rights: engaging with international and national human rights mechanisms to enhance accountability” and to Program area;
  • With guidance of the Women Migrant Workers Programme Coordinator, give assistance and follow up to the administrative process related with payments, contract process, sign agreements, presentation of Implementing Partners´ narrative reports Implementing Partners´ financial reports and follow up financial procedures;
  • Technical assistance to the Programme area and to the Program “Promoting and protecting women migrant workers labour and human rights: engaging with international and national human rights mechanisms to enhance accountability”.
  • Assistance in technical review of knowledge products;
  • Assistance and follow up to logistic issues in the organization of events;
  • With the guidance and support of Women Migrant Programme Coordinator develop technical documents (notes, presentations, talking points, fact sheets, guides) related with the topic of migrant women workers, labour and human rights with gender equality perspective;
  • Assistance and follow up to file important documents under United Nations Filing System;
  • Systematization of the experience of collaboration with Civil Society Organizations, lessons learned, areas of opportunity and good practices of collaboration.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in social science, public policies, women migration, foreign affairs or other similar subject at the university level.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language:

  • Fluency in English and Spanish;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language a distinct advantage.

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

UN Women Internship Policy:

Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • (a)    Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • (b)    Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • (c)    Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship  within a one-year period of graduation.
  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
