UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Unit/ Project Background:

HeForShe Campaign

“HeForShe” is a solidarity movement for gender equality initiated by UN Women to engage men and boys as advocates and agents of change for the achievement of gender equality and women’s rights. The campaign’s premise is that gender inequality is not a women’s issue but an issue that affects everyone, and that achieving equality will benefit both women and men - socially, politically and economically: heforshe.org

Mexico has launched “HeForShe” in alliance with the National Institute of Women on March 2015.

UNiTE Campaign

In February 2008, the Secretary-General of the United Nations launched the global campaign, “UNiTE to End Violence against Women” in order to create greater public awareness and increase political will and resources allocated to prevent and respond to violence against women and girls (VAWG). Mexico´s Office has led the implementation in the region.

The overall development goal of the campaign was to make certain that the institutions, NGO´S and governments implemented the “ÚNETE” Campaign by building an enabling environment to ensure women and girls to a life free of violence.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision and guidance of Adriana Apud, Communications Associate, the intern will assist the Communications Area at UN Women Mexico.

A work plan with achievements for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be agreed upon:

  • With the guidance and support of Communication Coordinator develop a document about the impact of the"HeForShe" campaign a solidarity movement for gender Equality and its impacts;
  • Support the monitoring requests of "UNiTE” campaign of  United Nations in Mexico to end violence against women and girls;
  • Contribute to the logistics of communication events: press conferences and events held jointly with other organizations
  • Generate a file photo bank UN Women;
  • Assistance and follow up to file important documents under United Nations Filing System;
  • Follow-up, organize and assist logistically in meetings, events and activities related to Mexico´s campaigns;
  • Support in the assistance and follow-up to administrative processes in the area.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in communications and/or journalism and manifest a great interest in social science, public policies and foreign affairs or other similar subject at the university level.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required; Fluency in English and Spanish.
  • Working knowledge of another UN language a distinct advantage

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

Working Hours:  Full Time (40hours per week).

UN Women Internship Policy:

Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • (a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • (b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • (c) Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship  within a one-year period of graduation.
  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
