UN Women Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Unit/ Project Background

UN Women is implementing a regional programme to advance the economic empowerment of women in the Southern Mediterranean region and to assist them to reposition themselves in the political and decision making spaces in their respective countries. In addition to country-level interventions, the programme works at the regional level through several initiatives including the establishment of a knowledge hub on women’s economic empowerment and political participation, which generates knowledge products, facilitates experience-sharing, and provides the technical assistance to the region. Under this programme, a website is being developed focusing on both political participation and economic empowerment of women.  The website will be in three languages:  Arabic, English and French.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Programme Manager of the Spring Forward for Women programme, and through a collaborative working relationship with other members of the Spring Forward for Women programme, the intern will assist the programme with the development and implementation of its website. A work plan with achievements for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be agreed upon:

Tasks and responsibilities:

  • Edit and update website content;
  • Conduct a comprehensive research on the existing economic empowerment and political participation policies across the regions and identify the national legislative frameworks that effectively addressed the issue of women’s unequal participation in the economy and in public life;
  • Assist in the mapping of resources for the website Publications;
  • Assist in the drafting of knowledge products, and occasionally in translating short text pieces into Arabic and English/French languages;
  • Support the proof reading of translations into Arabic;
  • Identify experts and regionally diverse organizations with expertise on women’s economic empowerment/political participation and invite them to register to the Knowledge Gateway;
  • Assist in the consultations with key stakeholder groups/partners working on women’s economic empowerment and political participation;
  • Support the drafting of the KM strategy and the partner mapping;
  • Assist with media and social media outreach and monitoring;
  • Assist in the preparation of events that may take place during their internship duration;
  • Assist in the monitoring and assessment of registered users’ usage of the website;
  • Support any other task relevant to the effective development and implementation of the website.
  • Draft brief summaries following e-discussions and other meetings on women’s economic empowerment and political participation.
  • Any other relevant tasks to support the Spring Forward for Women Team;
  • Maintain and update database of contacts and stakeholders.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in economics, gender studies, media, law, international development or other similar subject at the university level;
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English and Arabic are required;
  • Working knowledge of French is a distinct advantage.

Note:

In July 2010, the United nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment

UN Women Internship Policy:

Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • (A) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • (B) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • (C) Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year;
  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
