Background

The Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy (BERA) is responsible for UNDP’s external relations and advocacy functions. The Bureau leads and supports the organization in cultivating, building and nurturing strategic relationships and alliances that are essential for advancing and successfully achieving the mission of UNDP. These relationships encompass a wide range and number of key constituencies and development partners, that includes programme countries, existing and prospective donor countries/emerging economic powers, multilateral institutions such as the IFIs, the European Commission, civil society, the private sector, foundations, academia and think tanks, the wider UN system, various UN inter-governmental bodies, as well as global, regional and national media.

The main priority of BERA for the next 12 months are:

  • Resource mobilization, coordination and partnership management;
  • UN & Multilateral coherence;
  • External Communication to raise UNDP’s profile and improve communication.

The Partnerships Group (PG) in BERA is the unit responsible for the relationship between UNDP and its governmental donors, working in pursuit of three fundamental objectives as outlined in the Funding Action Plan (2015):

  • Stabilize and raise core resource contributions;
  • Coordinate and support the mobilisation of quality non-core resources;
  • Support the diversification of the UNDP funding base by supporting fundraising through private institutions and individuals.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Key Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance and direction of the PG Team Leaders the Intern will be assigned tasks from one of the areas listed below:

International Financial Institutions (IFIs), Development Banks (DBs):

  • Analyze status of collaboration between International Financial Institutions (IFIs), Development Banks (DBs)  and central/national banks with UNDP;
  • Identify recurring bottlenecks/gaps of IFI/DB/UNDP collaboration; opportunities and projects for replication; and case studies;
  • Collect and analyze information, policies and procedures related to IFIs and DBs collaboration with UNDP; as well as material from external sources (including from other UN agencies) for comparative analysis and to incubate innovative approaches and ideas;
  • Draft two-pagers (Guidance Notes) summarizing key aspects of UNDP’s work with each IFI and Development Bank;
  • Develop standard presentations and accompanying talking points on key issues related to UNDP’s engagement with IFI/DBs for use in various fora.

Private Sector/Foundations (PS/F) Partners:

  • Research/analysis of innovative PS/F partners, and various types of UN-PS/F partnership platforms;
  • Analyze status of collaboration between PS/F and UNDP;
  • Identify recurring bottlenecks/gaps of PS/F and UNDP collaboration; opportunities and projects for replication; case studies;
  • Collect and analyze information, policies and procedures, related to PS/F collaboration with UNDP; as well as material from external sources (including from other UN agencies) for comparative analysis and to incubate innovative approaches and ideas;
  • Support online resource pages for PS/F collaboration (i.e. on Yammer, Teamworks or the intranet);
  • Develop standard presentations and accompanying talking points on key issues related to UNDP’s engagement with the Private Sector/Foundations for use in various fora;
  • Undertake surveys of Country Offices.

Statistical Analysis:

  • Collect and analyze donor information with potential impact to funding projections;
  • Support partners’ performance assessments and reviews of UNDP;
  • Contribute to improvement of corporate tools related to resource mobilization.

Communications:

  • Develop other outreach materials/products/tools for COs, in support of the areas above.

Events Logistics: 

  • Support for the organization of missions, meetings, events, webinars, etc;
  • Prepare meeting minutes/notes to file; Undertake follow-up actions as needed.

Perform other duties as may be required.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Intern must be currently enrolled in a graduate level programme.

Experience:

  •  Relevant national/international experience in development, international relations, management, communications, business consulting, knowledge management or related field.

Language:

  • Fluency in written and spoken English is required.

Conditions of Internship:

The conditions below must be met:

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP;
  • The costs associated must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation, visa, etc.;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for the medical and life insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship;
  • The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP, but to complement an intern’s studies; therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship;
  • Have a valid visa to work in the United States;
  • Provide proof of medical and life insurance;
  • Provide a Medical Certificate of Good Health from a recognized physician.

Documents required upon selection of a candidate:

  • Submit an Internship Application form;
  • Copy of updated CV/resume;
  • Official letter from University confirming enrollment in graduate program & graduation date;
  • Copy of school transcript;
  • Letter of endorsement from a senior faculty member who has directly supervised the student in the recent past and who is fully acquainted with the student's performance;
  • A brief paper setting out the reasons why he/she is seeking an internship with UNDP and what is expected from the experience.
