Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

In line with UN Women’s mandate and role within the UN System as spearhead agency on gender equality, Creating Social Forces in Pursuit of Women’s Rights project overarching goal is the creation of a positive legal culture that paves the way for greater accessibility to the justice system by women through the creation of gender-sensitive social forces within the justice system and in society pushing for legal gender parity. The project is based on three main pillars: the creation of a knowledge base on women’s inaccessibility to justice; the establishment of sustainable knowledge centers on women’s rights and social responsibility to push the rights of women forward by members of the justice system on all levels; the creation of legal gender awareness in society.

Under the overall guidance and direction of the National Programme Officer, the Project Officer has the following responsibilities:

  • Planning, implementation, management, monitoring and evaluation of the project;
  • Document lessons learned and produce knowledge products;
  • Provide day to day guidance to national partners, including capacity building, and create linkages.

The Project Coordinator provides support to the project partners to ensure effective coordination and implementation of the project activities.  S/he guides and facilitates the delivery of the project partnerships and activities by monitoring results achieved during implementation and ensuring appropriate application of systems and procedures and develops enhancements if necessary.  She/he works in close collaboration with the relevant partners and with UN Women’s programme and operations team, ensuring successful implementation of the project.

Duties and Responsibilities

The key results of this post directly impact on the ability of UN Women to effectively manage, monitor and support the project under the WPE portfolio. This impact should lead to enhancing the visibility and image of UN Women as an effective leader on gender equality and women’s rights and empowerment within the country.

Implementation of project activities:

  • Support the planning, implementation, management, monitoring, coordination and reporting aspects of the project;
  • Coordination of partners and consultants working as part of the project;
  • Be responsible for the timely preparation and quality control of all substantive technical reports, briefs and required documents;
  • Ensure timely production and submission of all partial and/or progress reports by all project partners;
  • Effective application of RBM tools and monitoring achievement of results on an ongoing basis;
  • Conduct field visits to supervise, coordinate and monitor field level activities of the programme in country.

Provision of advisory and programme development services:

  • Thorough analysis and research of the legal, political and social situation in the country and preparation of substantive inputs to the UNW country office programme planning under the women’s political empowerment portfolio;
  • Identification of areas for support and interventions within the thematic/sectorial areas assigned;
  • Design and formulation of project initiatives within the area of responsibility, translating UNW’s priorities into local interventions.

Facilitation of knowledge building and management:

  • Identification of sources of information related to policy-related issues;
  • Identification and synthesis of best practices and lessons learnt directly linked to the project;
  • Sound contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice.

Support to developing and strengthening strategic partnerships and implementation of resource mobilization initiatives:

  • Support the development and strengthening of partnerships with the Government, UN Agencies, civil society, research institutions, as relevant and as required;
  • Support the analysis and research of information on donors, preparation of substantive briefs on possible areas of cooperation, and identification of new resource mobilization opportunities.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s Degree in Law, Gender studies, Human Rights Social Sciences or related field.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience;
  • Relevant experience in socio-economic development project activities, especially on monitoring, reporting and evaluation;
  • Excellent communications skills, including strong drafting ability;
  • Professional experience in addressing initiatives on gender equality and women’s empowerment;
  • Ability to interact with both organizations and general public, good interpersonal skills and organizational proficiency;
  • Experience with UN Agencies will be an advantage.

Language:

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Knowledge of official national language is essential.
