Background

UN Women provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the guidance of the Communications Analyst, and in close collaboration with professional and support staff of Section, the Civil Society Section intern shall assist with the following assignments, which may vary in accordance with the priorities of the Section:

  • Outreach to partners and new constituencies using social media;
  • Develop and maintain NGO database;
  • Preparation work around the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW60) – reviewing of NGO statements; dissemination of letter to Member States; organizing side events between Member States and Civil Society/NGOs etc.;
  • Social media and outreach to civil society partners and networks through various socio media platforms (e.g. Yammer);
  • Compile and submit content for the Section’s various communications platforms, namely the inter/intra/extranet sites;
  • Assist with civil society advisory group (CSAG) outreach and networking;
  • Assit with research related to briefing notes and talking points for high-level UN Women officials;
  • Planning and organizing meetings, campaigns and events held by UN Women and/or with UN Women’s participation
  • Events note taking.

  • Familiarity with the role of the Civil Society Section, the issues it covers and its relationship to other parts of the United Nations system.

Reporting Arrangements:

  • The intern reports directly to Communications Analyst, who provides guidance on priorities. The intern may receive assignments from the Chief as well as other officers in the Unit who will provide guidance and supervision as required.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in communications and/or journalism and manifest a great interest in social science, public policies and foreign affairs or other similar subject at the university level;
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language, such as French and Spanish, is an advantage.

UN Women Internship Policy:

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women;
  • Working Hours:  Full Time (40hours per week).

Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must, at the time of application, meet one of the following criteria:

  • (a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • (b) Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • (c) Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.
  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship.

In addition to the application, the intern will be asked to provide: proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
