Background

UN Women Background:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Unit/ Project Background:

The work of Ending Violence against Women Section focuses on advancing the international framework and standards in ending violence against women and girls, as well as providing technical expertise and guidance to different stakeholders in the areas of laws and policies, prevention of and responses to violence against women, data collection, research and analysis. The main thematic areas of work focus on adoption/reform of laws and policies, prevention and institutional change, services for survivors of VAW, data collection and knowledge management. The Global Program Safe Cities is also a part of the work of the EVAW Section. There are currently 13 staff members in the Ending Violence against Women Section.

In December 2006, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted a comprehensive resolution calling for  intensification of efforts to eliminate all forms of violence against women and requesting the Secretary-General to establish a coordinated database (now Global Database on Violence against Women) on the extent, nature and consequences of all forms of violence against women, and on the impact and effectiveness of policies and programmes for combating such violence. Following this resolution the former Division for the Advancement of Women (now UN Women) developed the database. The database is the first global “one-stop shop” for information on measures undertaken by Member States to address violence against women. It contains information on Member States’ legal frameworks; institutional mechanisms; policies, strategies and programmes; preventive measures and training; services for victims/survivors; and other measures undertaken, such as the creation of specialized police or courts, and engagement in international or regional initiatives. In addition, the database provides the full text of relevant laws, policies and other documents, where they are available. The primary source of information for the database is the responses received from Member States to an initial questionnaire sent to States and subsequent updates, and complemented by research and information provided by independent human rights treaty bodies (e.g. CEDAW Committee)The EVAW Section serves as the Secretariat of the database. The EVAW Section collects and analyses the relevant information received in order to keep the database updated.
