Background

Grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, UN Women will work for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the centre of all its efforts, UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations System efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

The Inter-Governmental Support and Strategic Partnership Bureau is responsible for proactively driving the strategic positioning of UN Women so that the size, sources and predictability of its resources help the organization achieve its strategic goals. A service center to UN Women HQ Sections and Field Offices, the Bureau’s Division of Strategic Partnerships, Advocacy, Civil Society, Communications, and Resource Mobilization is organized into three functional clusters: Resource Mobilization, Civil Society, Communications and Advocacy. Given the scope and interrelationships of Division’s functional responsibilities, the work of the Bureau is highly synergistic, involving constant and direct interaction and information-sharing among team members, to provide high-quality advice, services and support to UN Women.

Under the overall guidance of the Chief, Communications and Advocacy and the direct supervision of the Senior Communications and Media Specialist, and in collaboration with Division colleagues, the Media Analyst is responsible for supporting all media engagements undertaken by the organization, in particular developing and implementing media relations strategies and managing media/press coverage for UN Women for French speaking countries. As a key member of the Media Unit and as UN Women’s HQ media relations focal point for French-speaking media, the incumbent builds effective relationships with the media to promote and manage its coverage of UN Women and its strategic areas.

The Media Analyst collaborates with and supports the Senior Communications and Media Specialist and the Communications and Advocacy Section to ensure media strategies and outreach efforts are aligned with corporate communications strategies and initiatives, including support to global advocacy campaigns, important international conferences and events and for the launch of UN Women flagship publications. The incumbent also collaborates with Division colleagues to support outreach campaigns, and provide communications support to help drive resource mobilization and donor relations initiatives, mobilize support in conjunction with intergovernmental processes, and for the activities and special events organized for UN Women’s Goodwill Ambassadors.

The Media Analyst supports communications and media activities and press coverage in English and in French, for senior management and officials, as required, including during official missions. Under supervision of the Senior Communications and Media Specialist, serving as the Communications HQ focal point for UN Women’s French-speaking country offices, the incumbent works on media strategies to enhance the visibility of UN Women with donors, partners, constituencies and other stakeholders, and in intergovernmental processes. The incumbent provides support to HQ Sections and Field Offices on media initiatives and media relations, including in French, including activities in connection with global advocacy campaigns and the launch of flagship and other corporate publications.

Under supervision, the Media Analyst drafts a range of materials in English and French, including press releases & media advisories, briefing notes on media outlets, fact sheets, stories from the field, etc., for inclusion in media kits and further public outreach, e.g. through UN Women’s website. The incumbent supports press conferences for which s/he and drafts media statements and talking points for senior management, and other officials on an on-going basis.

The Media Analyst builds, expands, and maintains a network of contacts with the media. S/he regularly monitors media coverage and maintains an archive of articles as well as TV and radio coverage. The incumbent also liaises and maintains contacts with counterparts in the UN system to maximize outreach on issues and make efficient use of resources, including UNTV.

Under the supervision of the Senior Communications and Media Specialist, and in collaboration with the Division colleagues, the Media Analyst assists with overall management of press relations, supports organizational outreach and media relations, and strengthens quality assurance in related communications work.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides public information materials and media-focused content in English and French, along with support for UN Women website, focusing on achieving the following results;
  • Provides communications and media supports for high-profile organizational events, and supports Communications and Advocacy Team, as needed, including for social media, publications, website and related needs.

Supports media/press relations for the organization, including with French-speaking media, focusing on achieving the following results:

  • Under supervision, ensures effective media relations with the media (national, regional and international) to help position UN Women to achieve its strategic goals;
  • Enhance media/press coverage of UN Women and its strategic areas, positions and issues;
  • Plan, organize and implement effective media outreach and placement for Executive Director, Deputy Executive Director(s) and other senior officials, at HQ and during their travels, including media interviews and press conferences, with special focus on  French-speaking media;
  • Support the organization and coordination of press conferences; interviews with senior managers and thematic focal points;
  • Media planning to boost strategic positioning of UN Women, including with the French media, with a special focus on corporate advocacy campaigns; launching of UN Women flagship publications and travel and public appearances of UN Women Goodwill Ambassador(s);
  • Identify creative opportunities and execute them to increase media awareness of UN Women, its programmes and projects, especially at the field office level; and to strengthen gender sensitivity of media coverage;
  • Ensure clear, consistent and timely responses to media inquiries; issuance of statement and corporate positions to media and other external audiences;
  • Expand corporate contacts with media and print journalists, groups, organizations and media outlets (audio, visual, electronic); topics, background information, news-related developments and coverage of interest to each identified. 

Serves as the focal point for French speaking UN Women offices, countries, and media; provides support to UN Women staff and build internal capacity for outreach and media relations, at all organizational levels:

  • Working closely with the Senior Communications and Media Specialist, serves as the focal point at HQ for communications officers, including for French-speaking countries, and provides guidance on media planning and placement, developing media campaigns and initiatives; strategies for effective media relations;
  • Support communications planning, outreach and implementation of missions of senior management and officials of the organization, including to French-speaking countries;
  • Advice HQ Sections and field offices on media and public outreach, in English and French, and also for global advocacy campaigns and launching of flagship and other corporate publications. 

Provides public information materials and media-focused content in English, and also in French, along with support for UN Women website, focusing on achieving the following results:

  • Produce communications materials, including press releases, media advisories, press/media kits; updated information and stories drafted and disseminated to inform media, donors and general public of UN Women programming initiatives, results and successes, and other achievements in English, and when needed in French;
  • Produce high-quality media talking points and briefing notes for senior management, in a timely manner on a regular basis in English and French;
  • Documentation of success field stories, in coordination with field offices, for effective outreach to donors, media and other audiences;
  • Support the writing of feature stories, incorporating multimedia elements – photos, audio and videos – which accurately reflect the work of the organization in all its programmatic and priority areas.

Provides communications and media supports for high-profile organizational events, and supports Communications and Advocacy Team, as needed, including for social media, publications, website and related needs:

  • Under supervision serves as the focal point for high-profile UN Women events at HQ and thematic priorities, ensuring adequate visibility and communications support is rendered;
  • Supports proofreading of French translations for the UN Women corporate website and publications, ensuring quality control of French content;
  • Collaborating effectively with colleagues across Division, build a repository of stories on UN Women partnerships that foster gender equality, with special focus on French-speaking countries;
  • Working with the Social Media Specialist, support social media outreach in French through UN Women corporate accounts of Facebook and Twitter, and other social media platforms, as needed.

Impact of Results:

The key results have an impact on the Organization’s media relations and outreach capacities and consequently the image of UN Women. It is essential to ensure appropriate international/ national press coverage of UN Women programmes, initiatives and events.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Masters degree in communications, journalism, public relations, social sciences, international relations, or a related field.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years relevant experience in media relations and communications at the national or international level, including experience in communications and media relations. Work experience on gender issues desired.

Languages:

  • Fluency in English and French (written and oral).

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
