Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

Through its regional office in Cairo and a number of country and multi-country offices, UN Women supports programmes across the Arab states/North Africa region. Programming focuses on increasing leadership and participation in public life among women, increased economic opportunities, advancing the women, peace and security agenda, ending violence against women and girls, and providing policy input to regional and global processes on gender equality and the empowerment of women.

The regional office has a close working relationship with the League of Arab states on a variety of areas, including the regional women, peace and security strategy and subsequent work.

Objective of the Assignment

The overall objective of the assignment is to coordinate the partnership between LAS and UN Women, to support in the implementation of a joint workplan between the two agencies, ensure timely submissions of reports, and execution of activities according to the workplan.

Duties and Responsibilities

Scope of the Assignment

The programme support expert will work under the joint supervision of the UN Women regional office programme specialist, and the Arab League director of the women, childhood and family department. The expert will be based in the Arab League offices in Cairo.

Deliverables: 

  • A comprehensive workplan outlining all activities by LAS-UN WOMEN;
  • Draft project proposals for the implementation of activities under the workplan, including solid logframes;
  • Ongoing reporting on project activities, including donor reporting at the end of projects; ensure timely submission of narrative and financial quarterly reports on all ongoing agreements with UN Women;
  • Ensure the timely implementation of activities in accordance with the workplan, including ensuring that delivery is on track;
  • Completion of financial and narrative reports, including submissions of FACE forms, in accordance with LOAs between the two entities in a timely manner;
  • Organizing conferences and meetings as requested;
  • Maintain and organize up to date hard and electronic files for easy access and retrieval. Ensure safekeeping of confidential materials;
  • Organize and coordinate filing of correspondence/documents and ensure up-to- date filing. Maintain both hardcopies and electronic copies of records and reference files on various subjects;
  • Create and maintain appropriate folders for reference materials received electronically;
  • Prepare presentation material/slides in Power-point for presentations for the meetings/workshops and keep all papers ready for meetings;
  • Draft minutes and reports of meetings as needed;
  • Support in drafting correspondence in English or Arabic, and some translation as required;
  • Support the work on the Regional Platform on economic empowerment (meetings, documentation, follow up, etc.);
  • Any other programme support tasks as requested by the supervisors.

Monitoring and Reporting Requirements:

  • The programme support expert will prepare a workplan for the assignment and report to the two supervisors on an ongoing basis.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Minimum University degree (BA).

Experience:

  • A minimum of 5 years experience working on programme development;
  • Demonstrated reporting skills;
  • Experience from working with intergovernmental bodies and the UN an asset;
  • Experience in conference management and organizing;
  • Experience in monitoring and reporting, writing project proposals, reports and maintaining an overview of budgets.

Language:

  • Fluency in Arabic and English, French an asset;
  • Excellent written grasp of Arabic and English.
