UNCDF is the UN’s capital investment agency for the world’s 48 least developed countries. UNCDF focuses on Africa and the poorest countries of Asia, with a special commitment to countries emerging from conflict or crisis. UNCDF programmes are designed to catalyze larger capital flows from the development partners, national governments and the private sector, for maximum impact toward the Millennium Development Goals.

Under the direction of the Programme Manager, Local Development Finance Practice in HQ, the communications and knowledge management intern will support the Programme Manager on the multi UN global Programme “Inclusive and equitable Local development” (IELD).

IELD is a global programme of UNCDF, UNDP, and UNWomen, with the aim of supporting local governments to design, plan, implement and sustain local investments that take into consideration the differentiated and specific needs and priorities of women and men, with a particular emphasis on unlocking domestic capital, for public and private infrastructure projects, which can have a transformative impact on women’s economic empowerment and entrepreneurship.

The intern will, provide substantive support to the project manager with regards to the drafting of a communications strategy for the programme as well as resource mobilization proposals, donor reports, communication and advocacy materials for the programme, to name a few, in order to meet the resource mobilization targets and necessary visibility for the new global programme.

Additionally, the intern will provide support to the Deputy Director, Local Development Finance Practice in drafting communications related materials, proposals, support in design of brochures and communication messaging and other related knowledge management needs to support the other thematic global initiatives including in areas related to Food Security, Climate Change, and Private Sector development as needed and requested.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Internship will provide substantive support to the visibility of the IELD and other thematic global initiatives as well as in attaining knowledge products, policy and programme outreach.

The intern will be tasked with the following activities:

  • Conducting research, drafting and editing a series of knowledge products and communication materials, including a programme brochure, fast facts, policy briefs, social media accounts, and other spaces to increase advocacy for IELD including on twitter, UNCDF in action, inputs into empowerwomen.org and other relates sites;
  • Organizing, uploading, and maintaining key advocacy materials or news related for the thematic global initiatives on the various newsletters and multi-agency networks;
  • Conducting research on Local Development issues at corporate level and writing summaries and analyses based on that research;
  • Support in organizing events and advocacy materials;
  • Assist in drafting of donor proposals, and targeted outreach materials;
  • Other tasks as requested by the Practice.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Enrolled in a masters programme in the areas of international development, journalism, knowledge management, new media, communications, Public Administration, or related field in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) throughout the entire duration of the internship; or
  • If pursuing their studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages;
  • The candidate must have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree.

Experience:

  • Experience in working collaboratively in a team structure;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and fluency in English;
  • Experience in social media, social campaigns a plus;
  • Ability to draft and write communications materials proficiently in English;
  • Demonstrated experience and interest in gender equality, women’s economic empowerment Economic Development a plus.

Languages:

  • Proficiency in English is a must;
  • Working knowledge of French, a plus.

The intern will work full-time at UNCDF HQ premises in new York.  A work station will be provided, and the intern will have access to an office computer.

Intern Conditions:

  • Interns are considered gratis personnel.
  • They are not staff members.
  • Interns are not financially remunerated by UNCDF.
  • The costs associated must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation, visa, etc.
  • UNCDF accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship.
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed.
