Background

The UNDP Programme (2013-15) is to support the Government of Myanmar in its objective to achieve democratic transformation and poverty reduction in the country. The programme aims to promote poverty reduction and sustainable development by strengthening institutional capacity of national and local governments and non-state actors.

 UNDP Myanmar in undertaking its programme with strategic priorities of (1) local governance development for poverty reduction; (2) disaster risk reduction and climate change; and (3) policy support for democratic governance, requires the services of individual contractors specializing in simultaneous and consecutive interpretation, and translation services from English to Myanmar and/or vice versa.

 As a part of this work, there are series of missions of international experts and consultants planned to be conducted, as well as the organizing of various events such as conferences, workshops and trainings, roundtables, with participation of national counterparts and international organizations and invited international consultants. In view of accommodating the interpretation and translation needs of the evolved stakeholders and of ensuring a quality dialogue involving in two languages (English and Myanmar), UNDP Myanmar seeks to hire interpreters/translators for providing timely and qualitative interpretation/translation services.

 Individual contractors may apply for all or any of the following services:

  • Simultaneous and/or consecutive services from Myanmar to English or vice-versa during workshops and trainings/meetings/conferences including note-taking;
  • Translation services including translating presentations, manuals, documents, studies and reports from Myanmar to English or vice versa.

Duties and Responsibilities

Interpretation Services:

  • Provide simultaneous/consecutive interpretation during steering committee meetings, technical working group meetings, workshops and trainings, conferences, meetings between the international advisors/experts and national consultants as well as national counterparts including note taking;
  • Provide interpretation during official missions including field trips to project areas including note taking.

 Translation Services:

  • Translate various documents, presentations, manuals; modifications/changes/comments made by international advisors or national; various studies/reports of consultants/counterparts; legislation, advocacy and information materials; documents of meetings of the steering committees and technical working groups; correspondence to the government, national/international counterparts, and vice versa;
  • Produce a 100% accurate translation of English text to Myanmar or vice versa;
  • Quality check and proofreading of translation ensuring no typographical errors in the final text;
  • Ensure timely delivery of translated and edited materials;
  • Make necessary corrections or changes required by the organization and re-submit corrected text within an agreed timeframe.

Proofreading:

  • Editing, checking, correcting of English to Myanmar translation work;
  • Assure translations are correct and consistent in terms of completion, terminology usage, correct meaning, correct Myanmar Grammar and spelling.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • University Bachelor Degree holder (Master Degree in relevant field preferable and an advantage).

Experience:

  • Relevant experience with a proven record in providing interpretation/translation services from English to Myanmar and/or vice versa;
  • Minimum two (2) years of progressively responsible interpretation work from English to Myanmar and/or vice versa with the government and/or international organizations such as the UN, INGOs and civil society clients;
  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in translating official government/UN documents (policy/programme documents) from English to Myanmar and/or vice versa;
  • Knowledge in any of the following area of study for specialized translation work - Economics, Governance, Law, Public Administration/Public Sector Management, Social Cohesion and Peace Building, Agriculture and Other Livelihoods, Environment, Biodiversity and Climate change, Disaster Risk Reduction, Gender, Human Rights, Health, Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines, Ability to produce a high volume of quality content, Demonstrated willingness to work as part of a team in a multicultural environment, Familiar with MS Office including MS Word, MS Excel and MS PowerPoint.

 Language:

  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
