Background

UNDP Mozambique is opening an opportunity for internship in the area of Communication. Under the guidance and direction of the Country Director and direct supervision of the Communication Specialist, the Intern will support the implementation of corporate communications strategy and work plans, with a view to influence the development agenda, to promote public and media outreach and to mobilize political and financial support for UNDP.

In close coordination with the Communication Specialist, the Communication Intern will support both Operations and Programme staff of the CO in communication related matters. S/he will also support the Resident Coordinator Office and will have a regular working relationship with Communication colleagues from other agencies through the UN Communication Group and within the UN Reform – Delivering as One – framework.

 

Duties and Responsibilities

Among other tasks, the Communication Assistant (intern) will be supporting on:

  • The supervision of the design and maintenance of the UNDP web site, intranet and CO web-based knowledge management system; ensuring consistency of the materials;
  • Maintaining the social media networks updated;
  • The facilitation of knowledge building and sharing within UNDP and wider UN family as well as with external audiences;
  • The elaboration of the CO publications including the Newsletters and Annual Report;
  • Identification and development of storylines for publications and substantive articles contributing to debates on key development issues;
  • Coordination and management of all CO publication activities, including content management, norms for publishing, design, liaison with printers and other suppliers to oversee production and supervision of publications dissemination.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Enrolled in a degree programme in media relations, journalism, publishing or related fields, in a graduate school (second university degree or higher) at the time of application and during the internship; or
  • Have completed at least four years of full-time studies at a university or equivalent institution towards the completion of a degree in media relations, journalism, publishing or related fields, if pursuing studies in countries where higher education is not divided into undergraduate and graduate stages;
  • Not have graduated prior to the beginning of the internship.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated keen interest in the work of the UN, and of UNDP in particular, and have a personal commitment to UNDP's Statement of Purpose  and to the ideals of the UN Charter; and
  • Demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views;
  • Computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Good knowledge and experience in handling of web-based management systems will be an advantage.

Language:

  • Proficiency in English is required and knowledge of Portuguese is desirable.

  • A brief paper setting out the reasons why he/she is seeking an internship with UNDP and what is expected from the experience.

Conditions:

  • UNDP internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
