Background
UNDP recently implemented the Social and Environmental Standards (SES) that will apply to UNDP projects and programmes, and has established a Social and Environmental Compliance Unit (SECU) within the Office of Audit and Investigations (OAI) to help ensure compliance with the SES. SECU forms one of the two mechanisms that comprise UNDP’s new social and environmental accountability.
The operationalization of the SECU within OAI is ongoing and requires support, with a particular emphasis on raising awareness of SECU, conducting outreach campaigns, coordinating our social media presence, assisting in policy research, providing logistical support for events (such as conferences, presentations, and meetings), and supporting its operations, including the possibility of assisting in specific compliance review cases. SECU is seeking an intern to aid in these functions.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the overall supervision of the Legal and Policy Analyst at SECU, the Intern will be asked to complete tasks from the following:
- Assists in policy and/or factual research;
- Assists in social media, traditional media and other outreach/communication campaigns;
- Assists in editing, formatting, and drafting relevant documents;
- Assists in identifying, collating and analysing potential evidence;
- Assists in event and logistics coordination, including conferences that SECU would organize itself and ones that SECU would attend/present at;
- Assists in various administrative tasks;
- Assists in the intake and processing of SECU complaints and/or Dispute Resolution requests;
- Undertakes other related functions as requested by the Legal and Policy Analyst at SECU or others at OAI/SECU;
- If multilingual, assists in translations and translation quality control of relevant documents, as well as outreach/inreach in other languages;
- Possesses a willingness to be adaptive, take on extra responsibility, be proactive and willing to help on whatever needs assistance.
Competencies
- Excellent communication skills;
- Ability to handle multiple tasks;
- Demonstrates ability to use and apply the following technical process of aides:
- Microsoft office suite;
- Database applications.
Required Skills and Experience
Education:
- Current enrollment in a related graduate program such as communications, marketing, graphic design/visual communications, public relations, law, international development, international affairs, human/environmental rights law, international public policy or other related field;
- Enrolled in a graduate program for the duration of the internship.
Experience:
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office programs (word, power point, excel) required;
- Knowledge of social media platforms required;
- Knowledge of graphic design software (Adobe suite, etc) desirable;
- Interest and/or experience in law/regulatory schemes/compliance/administrative decision-making/accountability/alternative dispute resolution/international development desirable.
Language:
- Fluency in written and spoken English required;
- Proficiency in French and/or Spanish highly desirable;
- Proficiency in other languages desirable.
Additional Information:
- Internship is located at UNDP Headquarters in New York;
- Internship will be for at least 3 days per week and for at least 4 months;
- Internship will start sometime in October or November.
Conditions:
- Must legally be allowed to reside and intern in the United States;
- UNDP is unable to sponsor visas;
- Internship is unpaid;
- The intern must find his/her own lodging and secure funding from outside sources, or fund him/herself for the duration of the internship.
