Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, the UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It will provide strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnership with civil society and other relevant actors.

In order to reinforce its Office for Somalia, UN Women seeks to recruit a Driver to provide reliable and safe driving services to the UN Women Representative and other high-ranking UN officials and visitors ensuring the highest standards of discretion and integrity, sense of responsibility, and excellent knowledge of protocol and security issues. The Driver also demonstrates a client-oriented approach, courtesy, confidentiality, tact and ability to work with people of different national and cultural backgrounds. Upon the request of the supervisor, the Driver can also provide driving services to the operations and programme staff in the Office, consultants and experts and UN staff on mission.

UNWOMEN is seeking to recruit a Driver & Logistics Assistant with responsibility of managing official vehicles in Mogadishu and providing logistics support to the procurement and logistics unit.

Duties and Responsibilities

Summary of Key Functions:

  • Provision of reliable and secure driving services;
  • Provision of logistical and administrative support to the Country Office;
  • Proper use of vehicle;
  • Day-to-day maintenance of the assigned vehicle.

Provision of reliable and secure driving services:

  • Driving office vehicles for the transport of authorized personnel only but this can include visiting Officials (Government, UN, Embassy Officials, etc.);
  • Ensuring that all passengers wear their seat belts at all times in the vehicle;
  • Enforcing the no smoking policy in the vehicle;
  • Facilitating immigration and customs formalities as required;
  • Escort: meet high-level official personnel at the airport and facilitate VIP missions etc.;
  • Collecting and deliver mail/correspondence to Government, Offices/Embassies/Commercial Establishments/UN Offices etc. Interact with Finance and Administration staff;
  • Ensuring that all vehicles comply with the Minimum Operating Security Standards (MOSS);
  • Following strictly all rules and regulations in relation to the use and management of UN Women vehicles as provided by the Operations Unit;
  • Ensuring that all immediate actions required by rules and regulations are taken in case of involvement in accidents;
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Provision of logistical and administrative support to the Country Office

  • Liaise with Clearing and Forwarding Agents for clearance of official shipments while ensuring documentation for facilitation of such processes are in place;
  • Assist in all areas of Fleet Management including vehicle registration, insurance, maintenance, security, usage monitoring, vehicle ownership transfers and disposal;
  • Assist in managing the daily logistical issues of staff transport services, by working closely with HR and relevant service providers;
  • Update staff on various emerging traffic issues in Somalia;
  • Follow up on Protocol matters for the organization and its eligible staff, including handing of visas, work permits and diplomatic identity cards;
  • Submit applications for Tax Exemption to the Ministry of Planning and Finance, and follow up with relevant Government Ministries for approval of exemption and regulatory documents, issuance of motor vehicle number plates and logbooks as necessary;
  • Log official trips in the official log books.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:            

  • Secondary Education certificate;
  • Valid Driver’s license and a certificate of good conduct.

Experience:          

  • 2 years’ work experience gained in an international organization with good mechanical knowledge; safe driving record; knowledge of driving rules and regulations and skills in minor vehicle repair;
  • Good computing skills with knowledge of Ms. Office applications, particularly Ms. Excel;
  • Good written and oral communications skills;

Language Requirements:  

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Knowledge of local languages of the area would be an asset.
