Background

Who Are We?

UNCDF is the UN’s capital investment agency for the world’s 48 least developed countries. It creates new opportunities for poor people and their communities by increasing access to   microfinance and investment capital.  UNCDF focuses on Africa and the poorest countries of Asia, with a special commitment to countries emerging from conflict or crisis. It provides seed capital – grants and loans – and technical support to help microfinance institutions reach more poor households and small businesses, and local governments finance the capital investments – water systems, feeder roads, schools, irrigation schemes – that will improve poor peoples’ lives.  UNCDF programmes help to empower women, and are designed to catalyse larger capital flows from the private sector, national governments and development partners, for maximum impact toward the Millennium Development Goals.

Why Myanmar?

Myanmar society is experiencing unprecedented transition from nearly 60 years of past conflict towards a peaceful, dynamic market-oriented economy. Due to a weak infrastructure in financial sector, the inclusion of the regulated financial services is limited to a very small group of people. Most of the citizen, small and medium sized businesses find themselves hard to get access to low cost capital and efficient financing. Here in Myanmar, you would be standing with us to help with the local society achieve a sustainable development in its capital and financing market, which we believe, would benefit the meaningful transition of the society of Myanmar.

What We Are Doing?

UNCDF in collaboration with UNDP is currently running several projects to improve financial inclusion in Myanmar.

MicroLead Expansion Progarmme is a global programme active in 21 countries. In Myanmar, the outcome of the programme is to increase sustainable access to appropriate demand-driven responsible financial products and services, with a focus on saving mobilization, to more than 100,000 low-income clients, at least half of whom are women and at least half of whom reside in the rural areas.

Expanding Financial Access in Myanmar 2015-2020 (EFA), is a 25.4 million dollars national project that aims at providing support to the government in the implementation process of the Financial Inclusion Roadmap, which was proved in February and launched during Queen Maxima of the Netherlands’ visit in April 2015.

In collaboration with EFA, the regional programme Shaping Inclusive Finance Transformations in the ASEAN Region (SHIFT) is a 33.4 millions dollar regional programme conducted in Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam (CMLV countries), where only a quarter of the population is included in the formal financial system. SHIFT aims at increasing income and employment as well as reducing vulnerability to shocks and poverty by including 6 million low-income people, especially women, micro-entrepreneurs and SMEs in the formal economy by 2020.
