Background

As an implementing agency of the Global Environment Facility (GEF), UNDP oversees a portfolio of projects in the focal areas of biodiversity, climate change, international waters, ozone depleting substance phase-out, land degradation, and persistent organic pollutants. The cumulative value of UNDP's GEF portfolio is valued at over US$5 billion. These projects are implemented through UNDP's network of more than 130 country offices located in developing countries as well as numerous UN and other agency partners. Given the highly specialized nature of the GEF Program, the UNDP-GEF unit is organized by focal area, with the Principal Technical Advisor (PTA) being the team leader within each focal area. Each PTA-with the assistance of a global Results, Knowledge Specialist (RKS}-supports and guides a team of Regional Technical Advisors (RTAs) in the development and implementation of projects, and in the completion of the required monitoring and evaluation tools.

As part of project monitoring and evaluation, the UNDP-GEF Ecosystems and Biodiversity (EBD) team collects a large amount of qualitative and quantitative data from individual projects. These data come from:

  • Individual Annual Performance Review/Project Implementation Reports (APR/PIRs), an annual reporting requirement of UNDP and GEF;
  • GEFTracking Tools (TIL which are required at project start, midterm and closure; and
  • Midterm Review (MTR) and Terminal Evaluation (TE) reports.

The overall purpose of this internship is to improve and support the management of project-level data for the entire EBD portfolio. The intern will report directly to the EBD RKS.
