Background

Under the overall supervision of the Director of the Legal Support Office, Bureau for Management Services and reporting directly to the Senior Legal Advisor and Head of the Corporate and Institutional Legal Practice, the Legal Analyst provides technical support on a variety of institutional and commercial issues of private, comparative and as appropriate, international law.

Duties and Responsibilities

Carries out legal research and drafts initial legal opinions on institutional matters relating to, inter alia, relationships with governments, inter-governmental organizations, non-governmental and private sector entities, including issues related to status, mandate and operational modalities; the privileges and immunities of the Organization; intellectual property rights; use/misuse of the name and emblem of UNDP, UNV, and UNCDF.

Assists in negotiation and drafting of agreements and arrangements with governments, other organs of the UN, Specialized Agencies of the UN System, other inter-governmental organizations, non-governmental organizations and the private sector, including cost-sharing, trust funds, management services and partnership agreements.

Assist in negotiation and settlement of claims and disputes arising from agreements, contracts, and other arrangements, including commercial claims and disputes involving the organization.

Assist in the provision of advice on legal aspects of procurement issues and assists in the review, preparation and negotiation of substantial and complex contracts for UNDP headquarters units and country offices, including leases, goods and services contracts.

Assist in the preparation and update of model legal agreements.

Assist in maintenance and regular update of the work log for the Corporate and Institutional Team. 

Undertakes other related functions as requested by the Director of the Legal Support Office or the Senior Legal Adviser of the Corporate and Institutional Law practice.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:        

  • An advanced degree in law (Masters level or equivalent).

Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years’ experience in the practice of law with a law firm, a government and/or an international organization’s legal office;
  • Admittance to the bar of a Member State or equivalent qualification to practice law in a Member State is desirable.

Language:

  • Excellent command of oral and written English;
  • Working knowledge of another United Nations official language would be an advantage.
