Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women's rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women will lead and coordinate United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world.

The Communications section supports the positioning of women’s empowerment and gender equality as key issues on the international agenda and establishes UN Women’s role as the global authority in this context.

This entails showcasing its leadership on gender equality through contemporary video and multimedia products, highlighting the organization’s results-oriented, impactful interventions on the ground.

Video and multimedia products are to support the three objectives of the Communications strategy:

  • Drive and support advocacy efforts to advance women’s empowerment and gender equality;
  • Increase UN Women’s visibility to support its resource mobilization goals;
  • Enhance public awareness on gender equality goals and UN Women’s role in achieving them.

Duties and Responsibilities

UN Women is seeking the services of a talented video producer who – in consultation with UN Women’s and Communications teams – will:

  • Support UN Women HQ functions through video production and post-production;
  • Shoot and conduct interviews at UN HQ as needed;
  • Edit footage and interviews into a variety of video deliverables intended for broadcast, web, social media outlets, and UN Women internal use;
  • Draft scripts, outlines and storyboards for original content production;
  • Organize, edit and retool existing footage and video archives;
  • Travel to designated UN Women country offices to gather footage of beneficiaries, implementing partners and UN Women staff;
  • Edit field footage into short branded video about UN Women initiatives;
  • Share and submit subsequent cuts – at least two rounds (a rough and fine cut) – until finalization and delivery of a final cut. .

Under the supervision of the UN Women Media & Advocacy Team, the consultant will be responsible for:

  • Ensure that all required videography services is completed on deadline;
  • Ensure that correct video formats are used as requested by UN Women;
  • Ensure highest broadcast quality of videography: HD 1920x1080 or better;

UN Women will provide access to b-roll and interviews from a variety of global locations and past productions. Access to UN Photo’s photo library as well as our own photo library will also be provided. The videographer will select and license music for the video.

Details of Assignment:

  • The b-roll footage from each country should strive to illustrate the situation of women prior to and after (where relevant) reforms took place;
  • The interview subjects should speak about their experiences and the impact of UN Women’s work on their lives and livelihoods;
  • The b-roll footage should capture women in action. For example, in their capacities as voters, decision-makers or accessing services;
  • Some elements of the footage should also capture UN Women branding as displayed on signage, posters, t-shirts, dignity kits etc.

Copyright and Rights:

UN Women will have exclusive rights to the all the footage and final product

  • UN women will provide a release and producer is responsible for coordinating all releases from interviewees and anyone appearing in new footage;
  • UN Women has the right to use the video in perpetuity in web and on multimedia platforms and upload any still images it to our photo database;
  • UN Women can provide the raw video footage to other UN organizations or the media at no cost, as is the practice.

Deliverables

Under the supervision of the UN Women Media & Advocacy Team, the consultant will work on various aspects of video production for several projects, including the following:

  • Filming interviews of various UN system events including Social Good Summit, General Assembly, Executive Board, Sustainable Development Goals Launch in New York;
  • Producing videos of UN Women  projects;
  • Producing promotional material for UN Women such as public service announcements;
  • Filming footage and B-Roll for UN Women, its partners and media;
  • Filming and editing videos about UN Women’s work on the ground;
  • Original music composition and graphics files must be delivered as needed;
  • All raw footage filmed during contractual period must be delivered to UN Women HQ. All rights reserved.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Bachelors degree in journalism, filmmaking or related field.

Experience:

  • 5 years of experience in journalism and filmmaking;
  • Ability to film broadcast quality video and audio: HD 1920x1080 or better;
  • Have Adobe Premiere Pro editing expertise (and other professional editing software i.e. FCP X, Adobe After Effects);
  • Knowledge of different video formats and video file conversions;
  • Knowledge of converting of video files from multiple formats;
  • Have Online video publishing and file transfer expertise;
  • Working knowledge of YouTube and other social media sites;
  • Knowledge of lighting for video.

Language:

  • Fluency in English;
  • Knowledge of other UN languages (French, Spanish, Arabic) an asset.

  • Proven track record in producing similar projects;
  • Provision of at least three video samples of  your work on reel (via URL);
  • Consultant must own their own professional production and editing equipment. Full frame cameras with prime lenses preferred. Other suggested equipment includes: wireless and shotgun microphones, tripods, light kit and dolly/sliders;
  • Knowledge of gender issues an advantage.
