Background

The UN Women Office of the Executive Director is looking for interns in various disciplines.  Students from each particular field are welcome to apply, and depending on qualifications, shall be selected for internships related to that field. While submitting their applications, candidates should indicate their preferred area of work and if applying for more than one area, indicate the order of preference.

Unit/ Project Background

The Internship positions will be located in the Office of the Under-Secretary-General / Executive Director, UN Women. The Office of the Executive Director, UN Women is responsible for managing and ensuring the provision of substantive support to intergovernmental processes on gender equality and the empowerment of women on a global level. The Office of the Executive Director is also responsible for providing vision, strategic planning and establishing priorities, leading the senior management team, leading advocacy as a global voice for women, ensuring coordination in the UN Common System, providing overall management and oversight and ensuring accountability to governance bodies.

Duties and Responsibilities

Description of Responsibilities

Interns with the following areas of expertise should apply:

Business process re-engineering: 

  • Conduct data mining and analysis to identify process gaps, assist in the creation of Business Process Maps to document current and future state processes, assist in the creation of written and graphic documentation to capture Business and Functional Requirements, assist in the development and execution of process improvements to reflect new business requirements.

Strategy and Business Planning: 

  • Strategic planning of an organization's process of defining its strategy, or direction, and making decisions on allocating its resources to pursue this strategy plus control mechanisms for guiding the implementation of the strategy.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;
  • The intern must have studies in a discipline relevant to the area of internship (Communications, Management, Law, Web Design, Research etc.).

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language a distinct advantage;
  • UN Women will only be able to respond to those applications in which there is further interest.

UN Women Internship Conditions:

Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • (a) Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • (b) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • (c) have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year;
  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN Women during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
