UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

About the HeForShe Campaign:

HeForShe is a solidarity movement for gender equality developed by UN Women to engage men and boys as advocates and agents of change for the achievement of gender equality and women’s rights. The campaign’s premise is that gender inequality is not only a women’s issue but a human rights issue, the resolution of which will benefit both women and men- socially, politically and economically. Over the next 12 months till September 2016, the HeForShe solidarity movements intends to mobilize one billion men and boys, bringing together one half of humanity in support of the other half of humanity for the benefit of all.

The Outreach Lead is responsible for the development and implementation of an effective outreach strategy taking into account the following key strategic partners: UN Agencies, UN Women National Committees, HeForShe Supporters and other Civil Society Organizations (CSOs). S/he will ensure the effective implementation and day-to-day management of UN Women’s HeforShe campaign. The position reports to Senior Advisor, Strategic Partnerships.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Project manage key outreach priorities and ensure all projects have adequate research and scoping, well documented strategies, work plans, and budgets, and that decisions are made and actioned in a timely manner;
  • Prepare complex analytical notes, talking points, speeches and briefing notes for the ED and UN Women’s Senior Leadership on HeForShe;
  • Ensure that HeForShe is effectively mainstreamed across UN Agencies and UN Women National Committees;
  • Build, maintain liaison and manage the development of relations with external stakeholders including CSOs, and coordinate communications and information flow to stakeholders;
  • Manage, organize and attend internal and external events regarding the campaign and its impacts;
  • Represent UN Women at conferences, seminars and meetings on issues related to the work of the campaign. Manage, oversee and implement public events and meetings;
  • Keep track of current projects including all relevant project plans and budgets, along with any expected/upcoming projects.  Identify areas for collaboration and coordination;
  • Assess incoming communication and suggest courses of action;
  • Manage the recruitment of interns and volunteers for outreach events;
  • Any other duties as required.

Impact of Results:

The effective support provided to the Senior Advisor to the Under Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women in regards to the 2016 outreach activities for the HeForShe Campaign. The post impacts the HeForShe campaign results that in turn directly impact on the credibility and image of UN Women.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s Degree in communications, media studies, journalism or related field.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years demonstrated experience in advocacy, campaign outreach and policy analysis;
  • Demonstrable, proven results of short and long term impact of campaigns;
  • Excellent organizational skills, with proven ability to juggle multiple projects at once.

Languages: 

  • Fluency in oral and demonstrated superior writing skills in English is required;
  • Proficiency in another UN working language is desirable.

In July 2010, the United Nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
