Background

The Coordination Division at UN Women Headquarters in New York seeks to enlist a full-time intern to support the Division. The intern will assist with research, data analysis and writing on the status of women in the UN System.

Under the direct supervision and guidance of the Senior Advisor and Focal Point for Women in the UN System, the intern will support the Focal Point’s efforts to improve the gender balance in the United Nations system. 

Activities will include:

  • Conduct quantitative and qualitative monitoring of progress made by the organizations of the UN system in improving the status of women, including detailed analysis of statistics and implementation of specific measures and policies governing the recruitment, placement, promotion and retention of women and work life balance;
  • Assist in the preparation of the annual Secretary-General’s report to the General Assembly including detailed statistical tables;
  • Provide substantive input in the preparation of position papers and reports for policy-making organs, as appropriate;
  • Work with UN agencies to monitor and evaluate progress towards gender balance;
  • Research and write articles for Network, the quarterly newsletter produced by the Office of the Focal Point for Women;
  • Prepare analytical advocacy materials to assist with the implementation of the mandate;
  • Other tasks as requested by the Focal Point.

Competencies

  • Ability to translate complex statistical analysis into clear and concise narrative, with impactful graphic presentations of data;
  • Detail-oriented, with an ability to accurately check large amounts of data for errors and consistency;
  • Familiarity with issues related to the equal representation of women, gender mainstreaming and the structure and practices of the UN system;
  • Ability to communicate orally and in writing, in a clear and concise style;
  • Initiative, sound judgment and demonstrated ability to work harmoniously with colleagues of different national and cultural backgrounds;
  • Self-starter and team player, who is able to balance multiple responsibilities.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:    

  • Must have a Bachelor’s degree, preferably in international relations, international development, human resource management or gender studies;
  • Preference will be given to candidates recently granted, or in the process of pursuing, a Master’s or advanced university degree programme.

Experience:

  • Experience working with large databases and conducting quantitative and qualitative data analysis;
  • Ability to translate complex statistical analysis into clear and concise narrative, with impactful graphic presentations of data.

Computer Skills:

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office software, particularly Microsoft Excel;
  • Proficiency with Online communication, including Skype, etc.;
  • Experience with data-mining software and statistical programmes, preferably SPSS or Pentaho.

Language:

       •    Fluency in English is required.

Once the candidate has been selected, the following additional documents need to be submitted:

  • Scanned visa document/scanned passport document if no visa is required;
  • Scanned medical insurance document.

Conditions:

  • Permission to work in the United States of America;
  • UN Women will not pay for the internship; all the expenses connected with it will be borne by the Intern;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship; the Intern must provide proof of enrolment in a health insurance plan;
  • The Intern will not be eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN Women during the period of my internship or for the six months immediately following the expiration date thereof;The Intern will be personally responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed.
