Background

Brief Project Description:

In response to the Syrian humanitarian response in Jordan. UN Women works at multiple levels to respond to the specific needs of Syrian Women Refugees and communities for livelihood support, building on their own initiatives and skills as well as addressing vulnerabilities as identified by themselves in their women centers. One of the projects is the implementation of a multi-sectorial protection and support project in Zaatari Refugee Camp through the implementation of the Women and Girls Oasis.   The overall goal of the project is to empower vulnerable Syrian women refugees through increased access to self-reliance opportunities and meaningful engagement in community life to put in place the foundational cornerstones for increased self-reliance and durable solutions for the ‘day after’ in Syria.

 Organizational Context:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors. UN Women is also increasing its engagement in humanitarian response through interagency collaboration.

Duties and Responsibilities

  Description of tasks: 

Under the supervision of UN Women’s Senior Area Coordinator, the UN Youth Volunteer will undertake the following tasks to support to UN Women’s programming in Za’atari refugee camp:

 

a.Support to project monitoring, data management and result tabulation.

  • Support the collection of project data including through tracking visits to UN Women service and managing the collation and input of UN Women’s cash for work applications.
  • Maintain weekly records of UN Women’s results, in consultation with Senior Project Assistants – including electronic and hard copy files.
  • Track and collect data for UN Women inputs into inter-agency data collection systems.

b. Support to events management and communication.

  • To support the implementation of events in the camp including through the designing and disseminating invitations, following up on participation and recording the meeting.
  • To support the media and communications through the development of media products, engagement on social media, coordinating media events, translation of press materials from Arabic to English and English to Arabic.

c. Support to UN Women’s camp based pyscho-social and leadership work.

  • Organise regular meetings between the UN Women facilitated women’s camp committees and camp decision makers, ensure attendance and maintain meeting records.
  • Organise regular art, drama, dance and music events in UN Women spaces.
  • Support UN Women to enhance the quality of its educational and daycare programming.

 

d. Support to translation and other administrative work.

  • Support translation from Arabic to English/English to Arabic as needed.
  • Support to strategic writing (including the issuance of letters, meeting minutes, etc.).
  • Support to administrative and logistics work as requested.

 

Results/Expected Output:

  • Organised and tabulated programmatic results – both electronic and hard copies.
  • A schedule events and activities developed and implemented in support of pyscho-social activities.
  • Camp based media tools developed for review and approval by the UN Women Policy Specialist.

Learning expectations

Learning and development are a central part of the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment and take place before, during and after his or her assignment in the field. Ideally, offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aim to strengthen the volunteer’s skills and competences, improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteer’s motivation high.

 

Learning elements for the UN Youth Volunteer include the development of:

  • Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management, problem solving, team building; and career preparedness such as interview skills, CV preparation, job searching.
  • Inter-personal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural awareness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management.
  • Volunteering-related skills:  including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation.

 

Beyond the learning opportunities provided by UNV, UN Women will support knowledge and capacity development in the technical areas that are relevant to the UN Youth Volunteer’s assignment. UN Women will provide, at its expense, UN Youth Volunteers with equal opportunity to participate in training courses and workshops offered to its  personnel.

 

Living Conditions:

This is a full- time volunteer assignment according to the working hours of UN Women.

The UN Youth Volunteer will be based in Za’atari refugee camp. The transportation for the official field trips (if any) will be supported by UN Women as per relevant procedures. However transportation to and from the duty station is not an obligation of UN Women.

 

Conditions of Service

A 4 month contract and monthly UN Youth Volunteer living allowance intended to cover housing, basic needs and utilities, equivalent to  608 JOD (at single rate), settling-in-grant (if applicable); life, health, and permanent disability insurance; return airfares (if applicable); resettlement allowance for satisfactory service.

Required Skills and Experience

  •  
  • University degree in business administration, public relations, journalism or a related science;
  • Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2 years) in the field of development and/or emergency programming, from the on-going Syria crisis or from another emergency context;
  • Motivated to contribute towards peace and development and to serve others;
  • Good interpersonal, networking and communication skills;
  • Willingness to contribute and work as part of a team;
  • Willingness to work more than 50% of time in the field;
  • Flexible and open to learning and new experiences;
  • Respect for diversity and adaptability to other cultures, environments and living conditions;
  • Fluency in spoken and written English and Arabic is required;
  • Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, (i.e. studies, volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;
  • Computer skills (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, and others).

 

UN Youth Volunteers must be between 18 and 29 years for the whole duration of their assignment.
