Organizational Context:

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors. UN Women is also increasing its engagement in humanitarian response through interagency collaboration.

Duties and Responsibilities

Description of tasks:

Under the supervision of UN Women’s Representative, the UN National Volunteer will undertake the following tasks to support to UN Women’s programming:

 

a. Support to policy coherence and programme development.

• The undertaking of strategic research and writing including the development of project documents and concept notes, support to drafting talking points and inputs into policy documents.

• Research and policy note development on key legislative issues in Jordan.

• Support on research and programme development on issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals.

 

b. Support to UN Women programme implementation.

• Event planning and implementation (including conferences, workshops and trainings).

• Partner identification and support to UN Women personnel to undertake capacity assessments.

• Support to the monitoring of UN Women programme partners to ensure high quality results.

 

c. Support to UN Women’s advocacy and communication work on gender equality in Jordan.

• Collating, analyzing and disseminate knowledge on gender equality in Jordan.

• Develop and maintain strategic alliances between national and international partners to identify common areas of concern for increased advocacy/awareness, specifically related to gender equality in humanitarian action and women’s engagement in the economy.

• Support UN Women’s engagement on social media, in cooperation with the UN Women Policy Specialist.

 

d. Support to translation and other administrative work.

• Support translation from Arabic to English/English to Arabic as needed.

• Support to editing and drafting of letters, etc. as needed.

• Minute taking as needed.

• Support to undertaking other administrative and logistical tasks as requested.

• The production of high quality research and programme documents.

• Event management and enhanced visibility for UN Women.

• Arabic media support provided to the Representative’s Offices, in collaboration with the Policy Specialist.

 

Learning expectations:

Learning and development are a central part of the UN Volunteer’s assignment and take place before, during and after his or her assignment in the field. Ideally, offering diverse opportunities for learning and development aim to strengthen the volunteer’s skills and competences, improve the quality of the assignment and keep the volunteer’s motivation high. Learning elements for the UN Volunteer include the development of:

• Professional skills: including specific competencies and reflection on assignment-related abilities; and on-the-job skills such as time management, problem solving, team building; and career preparedness such as interview skills, CV preparation, job searching.

• Inter-personal skills: including communication and listening skills; multi-cultural awareness and cultural competency; and conflict and stress management.

• Volunteering-related skills: including leadership; civic responsibility; and engagement and active participation. Beyond the learning opportunities provided by UNV, UN Women will support knowledge and capacity development in the technical areas that are relevant to the UN Volunteer’s assignment. UN Women will provide, at its expense, UN Volunteers with equal opportunity to participate in training courses and workshops offered to its personnel.

 

Living Conditions:

This is a full- time volunteer assignment according to the working hours of UN Women. The UN Volunteer will be based at the UN Women country office located at Urn Uthaina. The transportation for official field trips (if any) will be supported by UN Women as per relevant procedures.

 

Conditions of Service:

A 12-months contract; monthly volunteer living allowance (VLA) intended to cover housing, basic needs and utilities, equivalent to J0D760; life, health, and permanent disability insurance; resettlement allowance equivalent to 1-month VLA for every year of satisfactory service and prorated for periods shorter than a year.

Required Skills and Experience

Qualifications/Requirements:

• University degree in business administration, public relations, journalism or a related science;

• Demonstrated interest and/or experience (up to 2

years) in the field of development and/or emergency programming, from the on-going Syria crisis or from another emergency context;

• Motivated to contribute towards peace and development and to serve others;

• Good interpersonal, networking and communication skills; Willingness to contribute and work as part of a team; Flexible and open to learning and new experiences;

• Willingness to work more than 50% of time in the field;

• Respect for diversity and adaptability to other cultures, environments and living conditions;

• Fluency in spoken and written English and Arabic is required;

• Previous experience as a volunteer and/or experience of another culture, ( i.e. studies,

volunteer work, internship) would be highly regarded;

• Computer skills ( i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, social media, and others).
