Background

The Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy (BERA) leads and supports the organization in cultivating, building and nurturing strategic relationships and alliances that are essential for advancing and successfully achieving the mission of UNDP. Within BERA, the Communications Group leads and manages external communications through strategy, media, digital communications, marketing, branding and global storytelling.

In an effort to diversify funding for UNDP and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals, UNDP is launching Digital Good, a digital fundraising and engagement platform aimed at individual donors in support of UNDP’s resources to support implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals. The Communications Group in BERA has been tasked with developing and managing the Digital Good platform and UNDP’s engagement with individuals. Reporting to Manager, Engagement, the Digital Strategy Specialist will create and implement a digital strategy for the Digital Good platform.

The Digital Strategy Specialist post provides strategic and tactical leadership across areas of individual giving, driving best practice with the ultimate aim of increasing income for UNDP, particularly core resources, to underpin all of UNDP’s general focus on the Sustainable Development Goals. Key business areas will be technology acquisition, message development and audience acquisition, retention and value maximisation. A key strategic contribution will be identifying and spearheading opportunities to integrate Digital Good across UNDP’s existing communications channels and optimizing results across offline and online channels.

Additionally the Digital Strategy Specialist will help implement a public engagement strategy that will involve individuals in UNDP’s core mandate and allow them to take direct action on the implementation of the SDGs. This will also allow UNDP to form a stronger relationship with potential donors and build a strong constituency of supporters worldwide.

The Digital Strategy Specialist will Report to the Manger, Engagement. The Fundraising & Engagement team is one of four teams in the Communications Group, along with Media, Online, and Marketing. The Digital Strategy Specialist will work closely with the three teams

Duties and Responsibilities

Help create and implement a digital strategy for fundraising from individuals via the Digital Good platform:

  • Working closely with the Manger, Engagement, create and manage a robust digital fundraising and engagement strategy across technological and physical divides (ie. across platforms, devices, browsers, etc). This includes the development of appropriate fundraising strategy within local market contexts and the provision of hands-on support;
  • Integrate Digital Good onto UNDP’s existing online platforms including social and online media, corporate and national websites;
  • Provide advice and expertise on donor communications, community management and prospective donor acquisition and engagement as well as post-acquisition payment management;
  • Work closely with other Fundraising and Engagement team members and selected third party agencies, in New York and pilot country office locations, to achieve efficient strategic and tactical intervention in markets, supporting pledges and income growth.

Manage technology development for Digital Good:

  • Contribute strategic guidance and technological implementation expertise to overseeing the work of the external technology development firm vendor to build the contact management and engagement database platform;
  • Work closely with fundraising platform external technology development vendor to integrate the digital fundraising strategy at the base level of the platform;
  • Advise on the adaptation and technological coherence and integration of the digital engagement platform across globally, nationally and linguistically differentiated platforms and ICT infrastructure;
  • Track new technology developments in the field of digital and online fundraising and engagement and quickly integrate cutting-edge and emerging ICT opportunities into existing plans. 

Manage digital marketing for Digital Good:

  • Designing digital marketing strategies aimed at growing and diversifying online fundraising and engagement programs;
  • Help in developing effective online fundraising and engagement messaging;
  • Work with teams across the Communications Group to build and market the Digital Good global brand;
  •  Appropriately locate the Digital Good brand in relation to UNDP’s overarching corporate brand;
  • Planning and executing digital advertising campaigns on platforms such as Google, Facebook and others aimed at reaching UNDP's digital revenue and engagement goals;
  • Work with the third party PR firm on audience research, A/B testing, and other relevant and appropriate market testing of the digital strategy for fundraising, and the engagement and direct action strategy, and on subsequent refining of messages and narrative for direct action, engagement and fundraising;
  • In conjunction with the third party PR firm, develop  robust testing and optimization of usability and/or messaging.

Help manage expansion of platform to key pilot countries:

  • Help identify candidate countries to pilot the expansion of the fundraising platform to the national level;
  • Work on customizing and localizing the digital assets, relevant strategies, and the Digital Good platform;
  • Work on localization of the direct action and engagement components;
  • Advise on digital asset allocation and support the development of a fundraising development programme (including engagement and direct action and volunteering dimensions), and of investment applications, as well as the subsequent implementation and monitoring of these programs.

Drive best in class fundraising and knowledge sharing:

  • Ensure continuous local testing and collating data and apply to fundraising programs to maximize results. Insure UNDP is up to date on industry expertise on fundraising and engagement and keep track of competitor activities;
  • Facilitate the sharing of best practice between UNDP practitioners of digital fundraising and engagement, with content for workshops, social media, and intranet. Collaborate with the Fundraising and Engagement team project manager and assistant to give strategic direction to Digital Good’s Knowledge Management plan and to provide relevant content on the OneDrive, intranet, Yammer, and other KM and collaboration platforms.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Advanced degree in relevant field of communications, journalism, arts, social science, or related field;
  • First degree acceptable with an additional two years of experience in relevant field.

Experience:

  • 7 years of work experience required in the field of fundraising, community management, marketing, or other relevant field;
  • Experience working in or with the technology and fundraising industry and demonstrated track record of successful fundraising and engagement campaign management required, preferably in a social cause-related role;
  • Outstanding skills in communications, and understanding of media, multimedia and social media required;
  • Experience with media/marketing for special events required;
  • Understanding of international development; international relations; or environmental and/or other relevant issues strongly preferred;
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive within a complex multicultural and multinational environment strongly preferred.

Language:

  • Fluency in English is required;
  • Fluency in another UN language is an asset

Other:  

  • Basic knowledge of front end programing languages (HTML, CSS, Java Script);
  • Basic knowledge of back end programming languages.
