Background

Yemen is currently undergoing a major challenge within a political complex and fluid situation. The humanitarian situation is degrading, while a political conflict causing the ongoing war remains unsolved. Long-standing political, governance, development, humanitarian, and conflict challenges persist in undermining stability.  Political affiliations and realities on the ground change rapidly, with external as well as internal dynamics influencing the political landscape. At the same time, humanitarian needs are fast growing, with a number of challenges facing UN and international partners in their response to the growing needs.

The UN Resident Coordinator is required to always be well informed about political developments, humanitarian updates, international and regional developments with impact on the situation in Yemen, as well as statements and similar coming out of UN agencies and other partners on the ground, all including both English and Arabic sources. The RC also benefits from getting a notion of public opinion on UN and matters relevant to the work of UN and partners in Yemen.

The consultant will follow developments on the ground closely by providing media updates to the RC on a daily basis, as well as be available to provide clarifications and latest updates over phone and in person when needed.

Being well informed about the media coverage on Yemen enables the Resident Coordinator to better provide advice and direction to the work of the UN in Yemen, as well as predict upcoming developments.

Summary of key functions: 

  • The consultant will provide daily media updates to the RC by mail, with a set deadline every day. The consultant will also be available to provide further clarifications when needed, as well as briefings to the RC over phone or in person when requested.

Purpose:

  • Enable the UN RC to better understand the media coverage on Yemen, both inside the country and outside, including social media.

Objective:

  • Better enable the UN to engage with the Yemeni public and respond to concerns.

Scope of work

The national consultant is tasked to:

  • Monitor Yemeni media (Arabic and English) and summarize findings relevant to UN and UNs work in Yemen;
  • This would include media outlets affiliated to the various different political fractions in Yemen and should include source and affiliation;
  • Provide update on events and developments in various regions in Yemen;
  • Monitor regional and international media on analysis/coverage of the situation in Yemen. Provide a brief paragraph; summary/ingress, always include date, source and affiliation, and link to article/opinion/report/analysis;
  • Monitor regional and international media on political developments relevant to Yemen. Provide a brief paragraph summary/ingress, always include source and affiliation, and link to article/opinion/report/analysis;
  • Monitor updates in media from UN agencies in Yemen and provide summary and link (interviews, press releases, statements etc.);
  • Quick paragraph on ‘trending on social media', providing a glimpse into what Yemenis are discussing/expressing online;
  • Be available to provide clarifications and oral briefings over phone or in person when requested.

Duties and Responsibilities

By a set daily deadline as agreed between the consultant and the RC, the consultant is expected to deliver by e-mail as outlined above in a timely manner with a consistent quality in both content and presentation/language. The consultant should also be available for clarifications or oral briefings when needed. 

The consultant is responsible for Monthly 30/31 daily media briefs - 2,5 hours daily.

Competencies

  • Excellent understanding of the political context in Yemen, in the regional and international context;
  • Knowledge and understanding of Yemen, including political situation and various shifting affiliations;
  • Knowledge of international organizations and the UN’s portfolio in Yemen;
  • Knowledge of Yemeni, Regional and International media landscape.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Master’s degree in Journalism/English or similar.

Experiance: 

  • At least 3 years’ experience with media in Yemen;
  • At least 1 year experience working with the UN;
  • Experience with providing daily media briefs to UN colleagues.

Luanguage: 

  • Excellent command of Arabic and English (written and spoken) is must.
