Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The United Nations Trust Fund to End Violence against Women (UN Trust Fund) was established through the UN General Assembly Resolution 50/166 in 1996 with UN Women as its Administrator on behalf of the UN system. The UN Trust Fund is a global multi-lateral grant making mechanism supporting national efforts to prevent and end violence against women and girls, one of the most widespread human rights violations in the world. The UN Trust Fund provides technical assistance and funding to advance the development of innovative models and strategic interventions in the area of ending violence against women and girls. To date, the UN Trust Fund has awarded US $116 million to 426 initiatives in 136 countries and territories. Its current portfolio consists of 111 grants in 76 countries and territories.

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Resource Mobilization Specialist and the External Relations and Advocacy Analyst, the intern will specifically be responsible for assisting in research and donor relations intel leading into the 20th anniversary of the Trust Fund. A work plan with achievements for the duration of the Internship and learning opportunities will be agreed upon.

Tasks and responsibilities [Terms of Reference]:

  • Responsibilities will include 60-70% research, 15-20% communications, and 10-15% administrative support;
  • Conduct comprehensive research on potential donors to the UN Trust Fund, including UN member states, foundations, and the corporate sector;
  • Assist in the development of communications and fundraising tools with a focus on collecting data, anecdotes, and trends over the UN Trust Fund’s twenty years of operations and grantmaking, as well as research related to the international women’s movements and key moments in the advancement of women’s rights;
  • Work with Portfolio Managers to collect information on current grantees and projects for the UN Trust Fund’s Annual Report and 20th anniversary communications products;
  • Assist with development of social media outputs and content for the new UN Trust Fund website;
  • Additional tasks to complete on request from the Resource Mobilization Specialist or External Relations and Advocacy Analyst.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation;
  • The intern must have studies in Communications, Human Rights, Development, or other similar subject at the university level.

Experience:

  • Experience in advocacy and non profits;
  • Familiar with women’s rights issues and ideally in ending violence against women;
  • Self-starter; organized; able to multitask and balance multiple responsibilities;
  • Experience in planning, and project and events management.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language an asset.

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

Note:

In July 2010, the United nations General Assembly created UN Women, the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women. The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.

UN Women Internship Policy:

Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year;
  • UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;
  • All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;
  • UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
