Background

Since 2001, the United Nations Development Programme has been responsible for the implementation of the European Union funded Programme “Partnership for the Future (PFF)”. UNDP-PFF aims at contributing to the peace- and confidence-building process in Cyprus through: cultural heritage preservation, urban infrastructure rehabilitation and community development, operational support to the Committee of Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP), as well as implementing bi-communal projects such as the new Nicosia waste water treatment plant.

The internship programme will help successful applicants to gain a greater understanding of UNDP’s work in Cyprus and communication policies and priorities. The selected intern shall work in the area of communications with a focus on gender issues, cultural heritage preservation, peace and confidence building. In so doing the successful candidate will acquire practical experience in various aspects of project management in an international work environment, the work of UNDP and UNDP-PFF in Cyprus. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Under the overall guidance of the Communications and Programme Officer, the intern is expected to perform the following tasks:

  • Logistical support to the organization of publicity/outreach for UNDP Women’s Film Week 2016 (March) and activities related to the International Day for Monuments and Sites (April) other UNDP events;
  • Research additional content on women’s empowerment, gender equality in Cyprus and draft related social media content;
  • Collection of information, preparation of content   and drafting of messages for @UNDP_PFF Twitter account, and https://www.facebook.com/UNDP.Partnership.for.the.Future/ and UNDP in Cyprus website (www.cy.undp.org);
  • Maintenance of information database and photo library for https://www.flickr.com/photos/undp-pff/;
  • Administrative and logistical support to the communications team, including for initiatives such as media site visits, preparation of press packages and communication materials (brochure, fact sheets);
  • On a daily basis, monitor local press and prepare daily press reviews;
  • Identification, documenting and drafting of best practices and lessons learned.

Required Skills and Experience

Education: 

  • Enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme in a communications related field;
  • Only those students who will return to their studies upon completion of their internship assignments are eligible.

Experience:

  • Experience in writing for the web, planning, and events organisation is desirable. 

Language:

  • Written and spoken proficiency in English is required;
  • Fluency in Turkish and/or Greek is an asset.

Driving License:

  • Valid driving license is required for the use of office cars for the official purposes as requested by the supervisor.

Conditions:

  • UNDP does not pay for internships;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;
  • The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;
  • Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UNDP during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship;
  • The intern must provide proof of enrollment in health insurance plan;
  • Interns are not staff members and may not represent UNDP in any official capacity;
  • The costs associated with the latter must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students;
  • or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation etc.;
  • Internships within the UN system are unpaid and subject to conditions with which applicants should become familiar with prior to signing an internship agreement;
  • Letter of enrollment from school will be requested from the selected applicants.
