Background

The Ministry of Labour and Social Development (MoLSD) is one of the service-based ministries in Bahrain, given the nature of its mandate and its direct connection with wide spectrum of beneficiaries, and the Bahraini society at large. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Bahrain Country Office, as a strong partner to MoLSD, has been engaged technically in supporting the Ministry in its efforts on several development fronts related to its mandate and mission.  UNDP and MoLSD have signed a project document to support the implementation of social strategies; namely: National Childhood Strategy, National Strategy for Persons with Disabilities, and the National Strategy for Elderly.  

The Project is expected to reinforce the results (and outcomes) that have been achieved so far in the previous phase of the project, through which two Strategies of Childhood and Disability were developed in full cooperation between the MoLSD and the UNDP.  

The intern will support the UNDP focal point responsible of liaising the joined project, with an aim to support the activities of which aim at improving the effectiveness of the implementation of the National Strategy for Persons with Disability.  
The Intern will work in close cooperation with UNDP Project focal point, MoLSD’s project staff members responsible of the “Disability” sector, and representatives as well as professionals from Centers and NGOs. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Intern will provide support to UNDP focal point (UN Officers) in implementing the activities of the disability-related outputs through the joined project with Ministry of Labour and Social Development. 

Under the direct supervisor of the project officer, liaise the consultancy related to: 

  • Development of Curriculum to Rehabilitation Centers (Focus on Children with Disability);
  • Update the Quarterly Progress Report; 
  • Prepare and participate in work planning and progress reporting meetings with the MoSD and UNDP;
  • Reporting of different activities conducted by the team members in English Language; 
  • Support the teaching activities of (English Language) at Rehabilitation Centers administrated by Ministry of Labour and Social Development for 2 months;
  • Conduct some research on best practices related to “Rehabilitation Centers”, especially in areas related to teaching English as a second Language; 
  • Develop a report on pre-requirement of travel facilitation of  Persons with Disability (Inside and Outside Bahrain);  
  • Identify all the steps that clients have to take to access disability -related services at 3 Rehabilitation Centers;
  • Assist in the assessment of the capacity and needs technical assistance of the NGO Center.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Enrollment in a Master's Degree (preferably doing a specialized graduate degree relevant to the area of Disability) with knowledge in Social Sciences, Public Policy, or other relevant fields from an accredited institution.

Experience:

  • Experience in the area of Disability is an asset;
  • Working experience with or good understanding of disability rights and issues;
  • Working experience in the public sector is an asset;
  • Working experience in teaching persons with disability in any subject is an asset.
  • Knowledge of disability rights and gender principles;
  • Proficiency in key computer applications (MS Office, email applications, databases);

Language:

  • Excellent working level of English language in both writing and speaking.

UNDP may accept interns provided the following conditions are met:

  • Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP;
  • UNDP accepts no responsibility for the medical and life insurance of the intern or costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during an internship;

The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
