Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

Programme Division Background:

The Programme Division (PD) sets the standards, assures the quality of program design, and provides guidance to country level program work of UN Women, as well as supports the coordination role of UN Women at regional and country level. It supports the effective use of results based management and reporting across the organization. It also manages global Trust funds, and Global Programs, and it provides technical capacity to countries on request, including a humanitarian response capacity.

The Programme Team makes possible the oversight function of the Programme Directorate for UN Women’s programmes and activities in the field.  It supports corporate planning and the oversight of planning processes.  It leads UN Women’s corporate analysis of developments and trends at the country and regional level, ensuring UN Women’s senior management receives timely advice and recommendations. It supports UN Women’s field based presences, specifically Regional Offices including on operational matters, and connects them appropriately to other parts of headquarters as required.  The Programme Team’s members represent UN Women in interagency fora, and provide support to UN Women normative work in intergovernmental processes, as well as contributing to resource mobilization and partnership building more broadly at headquarters level.

Under the supervision and guidance of the Programme Advisor, the Inter will support the Directorate of Programme Division at UN Women HQ in New York.  The Intern contributes to the development of program standards and tools to support results based management, quality of program design and adherence to UN Women Strategic Plans (SP) and commitments on gender equality and women’s human rights in UN Women programs/ projects as well as standards of accountability framework. The intern will support the Knowledge Management strategy of the Programme Division.

The internship will provide an opportunity to be involved with the implementation of UN Women’s Programmes.

Duties and Responsibilities

Knowledge management and capacity building:

  • Support the supervisor in the design and implementation of capacity building training activities with RO, MCOs/COs to enhance skills and knowledge in Results Based Management, Results based budgeting and systematic quality assurance;
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of global and regional program knowledge networks and practices, and development of knowledge products.

Technical support to the Directorate, RO, and MCOs/COs:

  • Under the guidance of the supervisor, contribute to the Programme Division and Programme Team’s work-planning and priority setting processes;
  • Under the oversight of the supervisor, support the creation of briefing materials for the Senior Management’s missions and participation in meetings and international events based on reports and other materials submitted from regional and country offices.

Programme development, management and oversight support:

  • Support the supervisor in the review of the regional and country program performance and progress reports;
  • Under the guidance of the supervisor, support the regular assessments of the regional and country offices’ strategic and implementation plans.

Support to inter-agency coordination and normative processes:

  • Support the supervisor on issues related to normative processes as required including attendance in meetings and other events and preparing reports/results of participation and following up on actions and commitments taken.

Partnership building and resource mobilization support:

  • Provide substantive administrative support to the Programme Advisor on matters related to resource mobilization, donor relations, fundraising activities in support of resource mobilization efforts in PD and/or on behalf the regional and country offices.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in business, communications and marketing, social sciences or related field;
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
  • Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Experience:

  • Experience in designing and producing communication and knowledge management materials is desirable;
  • Experience in big data visualization and social media is an asset;
  • Knowledge in the field of women’s economic empowerment is desirable.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English are required;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language a distinct advantage.

UN Women Internship Conditions:

UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship.

All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern.

UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship.

The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed.

Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship.

The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, resume and application.

The creation of UN Women came about as part of the UN reform agenda, bringing together resources and mandates for greater impact. It merges and builds on the important work of four previously distinct parts of the UN system (DAW, OSAGI, INSTRAW and UNIFEM), which focused exclusively on gender equality and women's empowerment.
