Background

The Bureau for Policy and Programming Support (BPPS) has corporate responsibility for developing all relevant policy and guidance to support the achievement of UNDP’s Strategic Plan results. BPPS staff provide technical advice to Country Offices; advocate UNDP’s corporate messages; represent UNDP at multi- stakeholder fora, including public- private dialogues, government and civil society initiatives, South-South and Triangular Cooperation initiatives, and engage in UN inter-agency coordination in specific thematic areas.

The Development Impact Group (DIG) focuses on assisting UNDP and partners to achieve higher quality development results through an integrated approach that links results based management and performance monitoring with more effective and new ways of working. It will enable UNDP and others to be more innovative, knowledge and data driven by identifying, testing, sharing and institutionalizing what works, including through effective development cooperation. One of the priority areas of the group is to support capture, analysis, and dissemination of lessons learned, from both monitoring and evaluation sources. Broadly, the Results and Analytics team at Development Impact Group is responsible for contributing to the following:

  • Data analytics and evidence based research to inform decision making;
  • Organizational support on data analysis, performance monitoring and decentralized evaluations;
  • Knowledge management, systems design and development;
  • Capture, analysis and dissemination of lessons learned from evaluations.

The internship will contribute to data analytics, and evidence based research to inform decision making, with a focus on UNDP’s Strategic Plan and Integrated Results and Resources Framework.

Duties and Responsibilities

UNDP is seeking an intern to provide support to the Results and Analytics team within our Development Impact Group. The intern will support on monitoring, evaluations and analytics thematic areas.

Expected Outputs and Deliverables:

  • Collection, organizing and cleaning of development results data, including contributing to development of decentralized evaluations dataset and monitoring data;
  • Support to the other deliverables of the team, including the annual report of the Administrator and enhancement of development evidence;
  • Support the presentation of analysis including graphs, infographics and Power Point Presentations;
  • Contribute to research and writing for various analytical reports; ;
  • Support planning and arrangements for events, meetings and webinars;
  • Attend relevant meetings and events in the NYC area;
  • Assist in translation efforts as necessary, depending on language skills;
  • Support updates to Teamworks, Sharepoint and public website;
  • Provide contributions to the development of relevant guidance and tools;
  • Administrative support;
  • Other duties as necessary.

Institutional Arrangement:

  • The intern will support the Results and Analytics team of the Development Impact Group (DIG) within the Bureau for Policy and Programme Support (BPPS).

Duration of the Work:

  • UNDP seeks an intern who is available full time or part-time for at least a 3 month period. Interns who are available for a longer period are preferred.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Current enrollment in a graduate degree programme (Master);
  • Focus or demonstrated interest in international development.

Experience:

  • Ability to collect, analyze data and present it in a clear format;
  • Ability to gather information quickly, and prepare in various formats;
  • Computer literate in standard software applications.

Language:

  • Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required;
  • Proficiency in French and/or Spanish is a significant asset.

Criteria for Selection of the Best Offer:

  • Only those candidates that meet the minimum level of education and relevant years of experience requirements will be considered.
  • A desk review will be conducted to identify the selected interns. Phone interviews may be conducted if needed to make the final selection.

Conditions:

  • Candidates who are shortlisted for an interview must submit prior to the interview the following documents:
  • Official letter from the University confirming enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme;
  • Have a valid visa to work in the US;
  • Letter of endorsement from a faculty member who has worked with the student in the recent past and who is knowledgeable on the student’s performance;

  • UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months;
  • UNDP does not pay for internships. Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP;
  • The costs associated with the latter must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation, etc.;
  • Proof of medical and life/accident insurance valid for the location in which the internship will be carried out (i.e. New York, USA).

  • The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies;
  • Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
