Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. Placing women’s rights at the center of all its efforts, UN Women leads and coordinates United Nations system efforts to ensure that commitments on gender equality and gender mainstreaming translate into action throughout the world. It provides strong and coherent leadership in support of Member States’ priorities and efforts, building effective partnerships with civil society and other relevant actors.

In January 2016, the UN Women Country Office for Jordan established a Partnership and Advocacy Unit in order to strengthen strategic partnerships at the country level, while ensuring sustained and coherent social mobilization with national stakeholders in advocacy towards the promotion of gender equality and women’s empowerment.

Duties and Responsibilities

The main objective of the assignment is to provide strategic support to the Head of the Partnership Unit in enhancing the visibility profile of the UN Women Jordan Country Office vis à vis national stakeholders – such as the civil society, the UN system in Jordan, and the donor community - while sustaining corporate and traditional advocacy efforts related to the promotion of gender instances in Jordan.

Under the supervision of the Head of the Partnership and Advocacy Unit, the Partnership and Advocacy Assistant will undertake the following tasks to support to UN Women’s programming:

Support to policy coherence and programme development

  • The undertaking of strategic research and writing including the development of project documents and concept notes, support to drafting talking points and inputs into policy documents;
  • Research and policy note development on key legislative issues in Jordan;
  • Support on research and programme development on issues related to the Sustainable Development Goals.

Support to UN Women programme implementation:

  • Event planning and implementation (including conferences, workshops and trainings);
  • Partner identification and support to UN Women personnel to undertake capacity assessments;
  • Support to the monitoring of UN Women programme partners to ensure high quality results.

Support to UN Women’s advocacy and communication work on gender equality in Jordan:

  • Collating, analyzing and disseminate knowledge on gender equality in Jordan;
  • Develop and maintain strategic alliances between national and international partners to identify common areas of concern for increased advocacy/awareness;
  • Support UN Women’s engagement on traditional and social media channels.

Support to translation and other administrative work:

  • Support translation from Arabic to English/English to Arabic as needed;
  • Support to editing and drafting of letters, etc. as needed;
  • Minute taking as needed;
  • Support to undertaking other administrative and logistical tasks as requested;                                                                              
  • The duration of the assignment will be 6 months and the duty station will be Amman, Jordan with travel to field operations as required. The consultant is expected to carry out his/her functions from the UN Women premises. Office space and equipment will be provided by UN Women.The position will be remunerated based on an “all inclusive” monthly lump-sum (week-ends and public holidays are not included). The successful candidate will receive his/her payment at the end of every month based on a time sheet duly approved by the UN Women Country Representative.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Development Studies, Communication or related field.

Experience:

  • A minimum of 2 years of working experience in the field of development, advocacy and strategic partnerships;
  • Previous experience working with the UN System and with the Jordanian civil society;
  • Previous working experience on design and implement awareness raising and advocacy campaigns;
  • Proven experience in project management and project reporting;
  • Proven advocacy, analytical and writing skills.

Language:

  • Excellent knowledge of English and Arabic oral/written is required.
