Background

The UN Development Operations Coordination Office (UN DOCO)  is the Secretariat and technical and advisory support unit of the UN Development Group. It brings together the UN development system to promote change and innovation to deliver together on sustainable development. DOCO works under the leadership of the UNDG Chair and guidance of the UNDG. The team provides field evidence to inform policy, facilitates the achievement of shared results, and promotes excellence in UN leadership and coordination. The core objective is a relevant and impactful UN contribution to development.

UN DOCO is recruiting an intern to support the work of its Knowledge and Innovation Team. The team provides a range of knowledge management, communications, innovation, and monitoring and evaluation services. It also supports a UNDG Communications and Advocacy Working Group, which brings together representative of 18 agencies of the United Nations Development Group to provide guidance to UN country teams on cross-agency communications and advocacy for the Sustainable Development Goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • COMMUNICATIONS RESEARCH: Review the joint communications strategies of some 30 UN Country Teams and assist in assessing the strengths and weaknesses of each document (based upon pre-established criteria).
  • ADVOCACY RESEARCH: Review joint advocacy strategies and assess which ones might be suitable for extracting principles of joint advocacy. 
  • Research into UN joint advocacy around the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
  • SOCIAL MEDIA/EDITORIAL SUPPORT: Edit blog posts and assist with the management of UN DOCO’s social media accounts (www.silofighters.org and Twitter @undgdoco).
  • KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT RESEARCH: Assist with draft messages to spur online discussions, curate online content, write blog posts. 
  • INNOVATION: Develop tools to manage lessons learned from innovation in the UN System, and develop a draft report on innovation in the UN system

Required Skills and Experience

  • Education: Enrollment in a post-graduate program in Business Administration, Social Science, International Development or other relevant field;
  • Experience: Preferably some relevant experience in international development or related area; Knowledge of the UN system is an advantage;
  • Excellent analytical skills are required and experience in research, drafting and editing documents is an advantage;
  • Language Requirements: Fluency in oral and written English is required. Fluency in other UN working languages is desirable;
  • Research skills: Strong quantitative and qualitative research abilities, statistical/ data analysis skills, and strong analytical writing skills;
  • Results orientation: Uses initiative and sound judgment to deliver required outputs and results;
  • Writing and research skills: Strong writing and research skills, extensive experience with social media and the internet, good analytical skills.
