Background

The incumbents are based in Aden, servicing the UN common telecommunications systems in Yemen. The radio network is monitored 24 hours a day and requires the person holding the post to work shifts and holidays when required.

The incumbent will report to the Radio Room Supervisor and will be responsible for the following duties. Applicants should specify the duty station where they are interested to work.

The position is funded from locally cost-shared security budget and not from UNDSS core budget.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Communication focal point for all UN staff in the duty station.
  2. Track all UN vehicle movement in the country, so that the locations of all vehicles/staff moving in the field are known.
  3. Monitor voice and data traffic on all UN radio network.
  4. Maintain a strict radio discipline, correct wrong use of procedures and as soon as possible report any irregularities relating to misuse or faults to the supervisor.
  5. Update call sign lists and other contact information for the UN operation in the duty station regularly.
  6. Distributed information related to communication system is to all agencies.
  7. Maintain all ICT equipment used in the radio room and keep them in working order.
  8. Operate any data communication equipment used by the UN common radio room, satellite telephone (email and fax) etc.
  9. Radio Programming as required.

  • The Incumbent will work on a rotating shift and will be required to attend work promptly and reliably.

Required Skills and Experience

Education: 

  • High School education required to perform the duties of the post. University degree with focus on telecommunications and/or related disciplines (computer science, engineering) is desirable but is not a requirement.

Experience: 

  • Five years of relevant experience in communications/radio operations preferably within the military, national police, fire brigade, or other security organization.
  • Good knowledge of computer applications (MS Office, internet);
  • Knowledge in hardware installation and maintenance is an asset
  • Experience as Radio Operator, Call agent or related function is a strong asset.

Language Requirements: 

  • Fluency in both written and spoken English and Arabic is required.
