Background

The Office of Financial Resources Management (OFRM), Bureau of Management, is a dynamic and results driven office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). OFRM contributes to the global development agenda of UNDP by being a strong partner with other part of UNDP, promoting clear and strong financial reporting and analysis to ensure accountability and compliance with UNDP's financial and administrative regulatory framework.

OFRM is responsible for the global financial operations of UNDP. The organization receives income, from variety of sources of funds, in excess of US$ 5 billion per annum. OFRM's activities involve financial management and funding operations of office located in 166 countries which include financial analysis, reporting, and financial risk management.  The Finance Intern shall report to a Senior Manager within the Treasury Team.

Duties and Responsibilities

The intern shall perform the following duties:

1. Support the project to review the need for CO Zero Balance Bank Account (ZBA):

  • Review the trend and pattern of replenishment of local currency bank accounts through the ZBA in these countries, as well as the method used: checks vs. EFT
  • Undertake Analysis of Offices with local USD Bank Accounts
  • Compile results and establish list of countries where ZBA replenishment process could be discontinued and replaced by replenishment from Master ZBA
  • Assess the impact of discontinuation of CO ZBA account and the feasibility of relying on local bank for occasional need of foreign currency for DSA and travel expense.
  • Develop project plan and implementation process

2. Support in Review and completion of the Banking interface survey

  • Reach out to offices categorized based on their risk category and take stock of their status on current banking interface types, methods, procedures and risk area.
  • Draft standardized SOP for banking interface.
  • Provide guidance and support to offices incorporate their interface in the SOP to ensure compliance and proper control
  • Ensure final version of cleared SOPs are electronically filed for each office.
  • Assist in drafting and issuance of POPP Guidance and related templates or forms

3. Support the project to migrate the Signatory panel from Bank Administration (BA) Application to Atlas.

  • Liaise with offices to confirm that the information is accurate and up to date
  • Participate with Treasury Specialist in any required Atlas clean up exercise, data entry and testing
  • Undertake matching/mapping exercise between Bank Administration information and Atlas for the signatory panel names, index number and associated bank account

4. Support in project to automate the Cash Management Review report

  • Identify source data of various areas and components of the Report
  • Design template for new Report Format
  • Coordinate with relevant units (OIMT, GSSU) iterance of prototype
  • Participate in testing

5. Performs other duties as instructed by the Manager.

Required Skills and Experience

Interns are selected on a competitive basis. The following qualifications are required:

Education:

  • Candidacy for an advanced degree in Finance, Business Administration or any other related discipline.  The intern must be currently enrolled in an advanced university degree (Master’s degree).

Experience:

  • Relevant experience in finance or banking an asset;
  • Excellent writing skills in English;
  • Strong analytical skills;
  • Strong MS Office package skills
  • Demonstrated the ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs

Language Requirements:

  • Fluency in English;
  • Working knowledge of another UN language is an advantage.

Conditions of the Internship:

  • Interns are considered gratis personnel. They are not staff members;
  • Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP. The costs associated must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation, visa, etc.;
  • Internship duration can be extended up to six months.

  • Letter of endorsement from a faculty member who has worked with the student in the recent past and who is knowledgeable on the student’s performance;
