Background

The Bureau of External Relations and Advocacy (BERA) leads and supports the organization in cultivating, building and nurturing strategic relationships and alliances that are essential for advancing and successfully achieving the mission of UNDP. Within BERA, the Communications Group leads and manages external communications through strategy, media, digital communications, marketing, branding and global storytelling. 

The Digital Editor (English) is part of the Online & Digital Communications team and the Media & Advocacy team. The Online & Digital team within the Communications Group is responsible for implementing a comprehensive digital strategy, including UNDP’s multi-lingual corporate web-site in three languages (English, French, Spanish) and Country Office sites and partner sites; and all aspects of digital media channels with cutting-edge multi-media and social media approaches, products, services, and platforms, including increased attention to mobile platforms. The Media and Advocacy Team is responsible for expanding and enhancing UNDP’s global presence through engagement with international media, events, celebrities and campaigns.

Under the shared guidance and supervision of both Managers, he/she will contribute to the implementation of UNDP’s corporate digital strategy, editing and publishing written and audiovisual material and disseminating it via other external media and digital platforms. 

Duties and Responsibilities

Maintenance and improvement of English global web-site:

  • Maintain www.undp.org with written and multimedia material from HQ, regional centers and country offices. Liaise with the rest of the team on whether and how material should be presented on the other language sections of the UNDP corporate website;
  • Conceptualize, edit and publish blogs, stories, videos, photos, infographics and audiovisual content in English that is clear, concise, vivid, and conveys key messages to target audiences, and images that are engaging. Ensure that all content is timely, accurate and compelling;
  • Search across UNDP websites and liaise with other HQ units, Regional Bureaus and Country Offices to identify blogs, stories and multimedia content to be published in undp.org; and
  • Liaise with the Communications Group to determine how specific events should be covered and marketed on the web in all languages.        

Provide digital communications support for HQ units; regional centers and country offices, focusing on:

  • Contribute to the team and the Communications group digital strategy and editorial planning;
  • Help all other specialized units to develop the most appropriate strategies for a wide variety of project-specific sites and multimedia products;
  • Collaborate and work closely with the team’s social media focal points, sharing content for different platforms; and
  • Review content submitted by other HQ units, regional centers and country offices.

Create and edit multimedia content and collaborate with other teams in the development of material

  • Create and support the development of a wide series of multimedia products including microsites, photo essays, narrative features, videos and infographic materials; and
  • Assist other teams with innovative and creative ways to generate additional multimedia content, eg videos and microsites.

Pitch multimedia content

  • Research media outlets and build relationships with journalists/platforms/organizations who are interested in or specialize in multimedia content.
  • Pitch placements of and support colleagues to pitch multimedia content, including photo sets, videos and blogs to print, broadcast and online media and websites;

Expected deliverables:

  • Contribute to the digital team strategy, July 2016;
  • Multimedia production for a wide variety of digital platforms, November 2016;
  • Edit and pitch content to external sites and platforms, November 2016;
  • Update and maintain web pages, including multimedia content, as needed, November 2016

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

University degree or equivalent in journalism, communications, English, Liberal Arts, international relations or related fields.

Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of relevant experience at the national or international level in media, communications or advocacy;
  • Demonstrated track record of editing work in English for public communications, marketing, journalism or related field required;
  • Experience in the usage of content management systems and social media required;
  • Multimedia production skills required; photo and video editing is an asset;
  • Experience in pitching of written or audiovisual content strongly preferred;
  • Previous experience with a multilateral or international organization is helpful but not mandatory, but a proven ability to learn new content and competencies quickly is required.

Languages:

  • Excellent written and spoken English. Working knowledge of Spanish or French desirable.

“All-inclusive” implies that all costs (excluding mission travel) that could possibly be incurred by the Contractor are already factored into the final amounts submitted in the proposal

NB: Only candidates obtaining a minimum of 70% in the Technical Evaluation would be considered for the Financial Evaluation.

Cumulative Analysis will be used in determining the best candidate for this assignment. When using this weighted scoring method, the award of the contract is made to the individual consultant whose offer has been evaluated and determined as responsive/compliant/acceptable, and having received the highest score out of a pre-determined set of weighted technical and financial criteria: 

Technical Criteria weight: 70%

Financial Criteria weight: 30%
