Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The UN Women Mozambique Country Office (CO) identified in its Strategic Planning for 2017-2020 five specific areas of impact: women leadership, women’s economic empowerment, elimination of violence against women and girls, women in peace, security and humanitarian response, strengthening of national planning and budgeting processes for gender equality.

Unit/ Project Background

In its endeavor to promote more informed and inclusive efforts towards gender equality and women empowerment, UN Women Mozambique is committed to strengthens its knowledge management systems and become a knowledge hub in Mozambique, collecting and sharing data, statistics, best practices, as well narrative material such as success stories and interviews.

UN Women’s knowledge management, communications and advocacy units are looking for a dynamic intern with a background in communications that can contribute in capturing such information from the field, elaborate it and share it with selected stakeholders.

The internship aims at:

  • Providing an opportunity to students and recent graduates – particularly from the Global South - to acquire professional and practical experience in communication and women empowerment in a challenging environment;
  • Contribute to building advanced professional skills and relevant practical experience to promote the implementation of equitable and sustainable development at local, national and international level.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Support the development of the Country Office’s communication material and editorial products, including briefs, brochures, feature and op-ed articles, interviews, pictures and videos;
  • Monitor national media and elaborate weekly media coverage report;
  • Attend UN Women partners’ and gender related events, take pictures, interview key participants and report back with relevant content for social media platforms;
  • Edit images and video material;
  • Support administrative procedures for knowledge management, communications and advocacy units;
  • Gather information from field staff;
  • Strengthen the Country Office’s presence online, ensuring quality content on gender equality and women’s empowerment is shared on social media;
  • Create and maintain a contact list of media actors to disseminate news and new materials;
  • Assist developing a Country Office weekly newsletter, facilitating content dissemination to partners;
  • Helping to organize meetings, seminars and communication events with donors, foundations, the private sector and government partners;
  • Support the creation of a CO website

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • The intern must have studies in Communications, Journalism or other similar subject at the university level.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher); Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); Have graduated with a university degree and, if selected, must commence the internship within a one-year period of graduation.

Language:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English and Portuguese are required;
  • Xichangana language will be considered an asset.

The above qualifications are required, however we are open to considering other subjects of study/experience in line with our evolving communication needs and our diverse audience - locally and internationally.

Interns are not financially remunerated by UN Women.

UN Women Internship Policy:

Applicants to the United Nations internship programme must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:

  • (a)    Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • (b)    Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor’s level or equivalent);
  • (c)    Have graduated with a university degree (as (b) above) and, if selected, must commence the internship within one year.

UN Women internship programme does not provide a salary or remuneration for the internship;

All the expenses connected with the internship will be borne by the intern, sponsoring Government or institution;

UN Women accepts no responsibility for costs arising from accidents and/or illness or death incurred during the internship;

The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary visas and arranging travel to and from the duty station where the internship will be performed;

Interns are not eligible to apply for, or be appointed to, any post in UN WOMEN during the period of the internship or for six months immediately following the expiration date of internship; and

The intern must provide proof of enrollment in a health insurance plan, proof of school enrollment, a scanned copy of his/her passport, two letters of recommendation, and application.
