Background

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were adopted at the UN Sustainable Development Summit, held in New York, in September 2015. The SDGs do not build only on the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) but apply universally and not just to developing countries. The Royal Thai Government (RTG) played a leading role in the discussions to develop the SDGs as a member of the Open Working Group on SDGs and has shown its strong commitment to the SDGs.

In 2016, Thailand became the chair of G77 and now facilitates the discussion among members to push for implementation of the 2030 Agenda and the Addis Ababa Action Agenda on Financing for Development through inclusive development and active involvement by all stakeholders. The government uses the opportunity of the chairmanship to expound the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej and shares with members the country’s experiences and practices of the philosophy as a growth and development model to achieve the SDGs.

The United Nations Country Team in Thailand (UNCT) which consists of 21 agencies has been supporting the country’s efforts for achieving the global goals. The UNCT is currently in the process of developing a next partnership framework with Thailand that will capture the country’s aspirations and priorities for development and its evolving situation.
