Background

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination of discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women; and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security.

The Intergovernmental Support Division is UN Women’s interface with intergovernmental bodies, including the Executive Board of UN Women, the Commission on the Status of Women, the Economic and Social Council and the General Assembly. Its functions are to:

·        Support the smooth functioning of intergovernmental bodies, including through: overseeing reporting processes within UN Women and providing guidance to, and sharing institutional knowledge with, Member States on intergovernmental procedures and working methods;

·        Gather information and identify and explore opportunities to support UN Women to further its agenda and anticipate challenges in its intergovernmental work;

·        Drive the process of integration of normative frameworks into UN Women policies, programmes, and coordination for wider-UN action.

Under the direct supervision of the Executive Secretary of the Commission on the Status of Women and the overall supervision of the Director of the Intergovernmental Support Division, the consultant will assist in all functions related to the support of the sixty-second second session of the Commission on the Status of Women.

Duties and Responsibilities

·        Support the Executive Secretary in the planning, preparation and servicing of the Commission on the Status of Women and its Bureau, including through drafting background and information notes, minutes of meetings, and follow-up to decisions taken.

·        Contribute to the Division’s support of normative intergovernmental processes on gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, including through preparation of summaries of deliberations, support for negotiations, and provision of technical inputs.

·        Contribute to the organization of panel discussions, interactive events, informal meetings, stakeholder events and other alliance building activities on gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls. 

·        Undertake research and analysis, and draft written materials including contributions to reports of the Secretary- General, issues papers and briefing/background notes in assigned areas of gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls.

·        Perform other official duties and special assignments which may be requested by the Supervisor.

Required Skills and Experience

Education:

  • A minimum of a Master’s degree or equivalent in the field of communications, political sciences, law, economics, public relations, journalism, public administration or other relevant/similar field.

Experience:

  • At least 2 years of professional experience in law, gender equality, communications and advocacy, and research and analysis  at the national and international level. Experience in the use of computers and office software packages (MS Word, Excel, etc.) and in handling web-based management systems.

Language:

  • Fluency in English, both oral and written, is required;
  • Working knowledge of at least one other UN official language is an asset.
