Background:

The World Humanitarian Summit (WHS) is an initiative by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to improve humanitarian action. Through the two-year consultation process, the aim is to build a more inclusive and diverse humanitarian system by bringing key humanitarian stakeholders together to share best practices and find innovative ways to make humanitarian action more effective. The process will culminate in a global summit in 2016. 

Organizational Setting and Reporting Relationships: 

The position will be located in the Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in New York. The Knowledge and Information Management Specialist will report to the Online Consultation Coordinator for the World Humanitarian Summit (WHS).

Responsibilities:

The Knowledge and Information Management Specialist will:

  • Design and implement a plan to apply the gained knowledge from the World Humanitarian Summit process to other related initiatives in OCHA and the wider UN system;
  • Design and implement a plan to collect, integrate, and apply the gained knowledge from the thematic and regional online consultations with other online consultations, regional consultations, and external parallel processes;
  • Support the preparation of summary reports from each consultation;
  • Coordinate the production of a diverse range of information products (infographics, reports, maps) for the World Humanitarian Summit online platform;
  • Manage the uploading and downloading of static web content as required;
  • Establish metrics to gauge impact and evaluate results of web platform activities;
  • Produce regular reports on developments, trends and outcomes of the World Humanitarian Summit web platform;
  • Coordinate language translations of  static web content and documents into six official UN languages;
  • Identify ways to improve online consultations to better address knowledge and information management needs;
  • Design, create, and maintain user documentation for the web platform;
  • Draft documents to compile and disseminate the gained knowledge and lessons learned from the World; Humanitarian Summit consultation process;
  • Participate in planning, specification, design, and support of WHS website;
  • Develop and maintain a contacts management database.

Work implies frequent interaction with the following: 

  • Other staff of the World Humanitarian Summit;
  • Communications and Information Management staff of UN OCHA, the United Nations, and the broader humanitarian community;
  • Translators;
  • Web developers.

Qualifications et expériences requises

Education:         

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent)  business administration, information systems, management, library and information sciences, human resources, or a related field.

Experience:      

  • A minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in information/knowledge management, information systems, public information,  or related area, especially within humanitarian organizations and contexts. Experience in qualitative and quantitative information analysis is essential.

Language:

  • Fluency in English (both oral and written) is required;
  • Knowledge of French or another UN official language is an advantage.  

Other: 

  • Strong computer and IT skills (Drupal, HTML, MS Office, databases, Google Analytics), experience in website design is desirable.
