Historique

At present, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Mauritius & Seychelles Country Office has an international Economic Advisor, appointed by the Regional Bureau of Africa (RBA) of the UNDP. The Economics Advisor is responsible for research, development and application of the principles and theories of economics to the formulation of strategies and plans for solution of economic problems, especially as they relate to the Millennium Development Goals. Economics Advisor analyses economic and social trends and provides advisory services to the Government, UNDP and others on development issues and policies.

There is growing demand from the Government of Mauritius and Seychelles for up- stream policy support relating to various areas.

The Economic Advisor is currently working in several areas listed below such as:

  • Millennium Development Goals / SDGs;
  • Human Development Issues and improving Human Development Index;
  • South-South Cooperation and regional integration;
  • Supporting National Development Plans and strategies;
  • International Trade mainstreaming into National Development strategies, etc.;
  • Provide analytical and policy support to the various regional research projects;
  • Prepare country briefs, policy papers on various issues, etc.

Devoirs et responsabilités

Under the overall guidance and the direct supervision of the UNDP Economic Advisor, the main responsibility of the Intern will be to support the various research activities of the Economic Advisor in line with UNDPs strategic focus areas.

The Intern will be predominantly working on providing quantitative and analytical research inputs on socio-economic aspects of Mauritius/ Seychelles and will:

  • Assist with the collection, collation and analysis of social, economic and other related data related to the various areas of work;
  • Contribute to the drafting and finalization of periodic Country Economic Briefs, featuring country’s macroeconomic performance and to its overall development trends;
  • Contribute to the analysis of country challenges and opportunities relevant to UNDP’s policy dialogue and provide support to capacity building initiatives in line with the country’s development plan and policies;
  • Provide support to the Economic Advisor for the policy-relevant research in above mentioned areas by helping review existing literature, data collection and cross-country experience, etc;
  • Help prepare technical and non-technical papers and presentations;
  • Assist in organization of working meetings, conferences and workshops;
  • Supporting the Economic Advisor in the execution of delegated tasks of both a substantive and administrative nature:
  • Draft terms of reference for National and International Consultants, participate in their recruitment, and follow-up on submission of appropriate reports;
  • Undertake any other activities that may be assigned in this regard.

Compétences

  • Demonstrated interest in the field of Economics and Development;
  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English;
  • Computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure;
  • Demonstrated ability to work in harmony with persons of different national and cultural backgrounds;
  • Initiative and sound judgment, dedication and respect for the principles of the United Nations Charter and the UNDP Statement of Purpose.

Qualifications et expériences requises

Education:
  • Enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme in a development related field such as Economics, Social Sciences, International Trade and Development.
  • Only those students who will return to their studies upon completion of their internship assignments are eligible.

Experience:

  • Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
Language:
  • English and French;
  • Excellent written and oral English language skills are required;
  • The working languages of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Mauritius are English and French.

Note:

Candidates who are shortlisted for an interview must submit prior to the interview the following documents:

  • Official letter from the University confirming enrollment in a graduate-level degree programme;
  • Have a valid visa to work in Mauritius;
  • Letter of endorsement from a faculty member who has worked with the student in the recent past and who is knowledgeable on the student’s performance;
  • UNDP only accepts interns for a minimum of 6 weeks and a maximum of 6 months.

UNDP does not pay for internships. Interns are not financially remunerated by UNDP .The costs associated with the latter must be borne by the nominating institution, related institution or government, which may provide the required financial assistance to its students; or by the student, who will have to obtain financing for subsistence and make his or her own arrangements for travel, accommodation, etc.

 The purpose of the Internship Programme is not to lead to further employment with UNDP but to complement an intern’s studies. Therefore, there should be no expectation of employment at the end of an internship.
