Historique

Background

On 26 June 2014 UN Women launched a global campaign in the lead up to the 20th anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women. Unanimously adopted by 189 countries, the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (BDPfA) is a visionary blueprint for gender equality and the empowerment of women. The campaign is thus geared towards galvanizing public debate, engaging younger generations, and renewing political will and commitment to accelerate the implementation of the Platform which revolves on 12 Critical Areas of Concern.

The Beijing Platform of Action, places an obligation on States to review national laws, including customary laws and legal practices in the areas of family, civil, penal, labour and commerce, in order to ensure the implementation of the principles and procedures of all relevant international human rights instruments. In addition, States are to revoke any remaining laws that discriminate on the basis of sex and remove gender bias in the administration of justice.

A substantial number of States continue to discriminate against women in their ability to acquire, change, retain or confer their nationality on their children and spouses on an equal basis as men—in contravention of Article 9 of the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women—resulting in grave human rights consequences.

The Beijing +20 review will be held during the 59th session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) and will serve as an opportunity to highlight the enduring impacts of gender discrimination in nationality laws in the lives of women and their families.
